Since 1997 and the onset of GSM telephony, more and more cellular antennas have been popping up in neighborhoods all around the world to support an ever-growing number of cell phone users.

In fact they have become so prolific in some parts of the world that they disappear into the landscape with the same subtlety as cars on the street. And those that don't 'disappear' are cleverly disguised as chimneys, flag poles, or water towers.

Full Signal talks to scientists around the world who are researching the health effects related to cellular technology; to activists who are fighting to regulate the placement of antennas; and to lawyers and law makers who represent the people wanting those antennas regulated.

Filmed in Eight countries and Six US states, Full Signal examines the contradiction between health and finance, one of the many ironies of the fight to regulate antenna placement.

Anti-Israel Propaganda disguised as Junk Science.

This is pretty much what I should have expected from an Al Jazeera producer.

This repugnant movie features anti-science professionals blabbering unsubstantiated health hazards associated with cellular towers. Those who study RF radiation normally focus on the phone, which, because of its proximity, is the overwhelming source of radiation.

But that is not appropriate for this director. He builds a case against cell towers to attack Israel at the end of the movie. The residents of the largely Arab village of Issafya are portrayed as being poisoned by the cellular transmitters of the Israeli cellular companies. A cartoon sketch depicts a group of protestors who approach an Israeli crew about to repair a cellular tower and are fired upon by Israel police.

This is the technology version of the blood libel.

This quote is a real charm:

"The telecommunication industry is well aware of the fact that it is almost impossible to establish that perfect cause and effect match and they very cynically understand that they can continue to promote this technology ... and that they more than likely won't be held accountable."

If you cannot see the distorted logic in this I will explain it. First, in science, it is possible to establish cause an effect as was done with tobacco. This "scientist" uses the absence of correlation between cell towers and ill health against the telecommunication industry. Note that I can play mad-libs here:

The ____________ industry is well aware of the fact that it is almost impossible to establish that perfect cause and effect match and they very cynically understand that they can continue to promote this _________ ... and that they more than likely won't be held accountable.

Now I can substitute the following word pairs here and it will be equally applicable and nonsensical.

    construction, asphalt
    toy, barbie doll
    brewery, beer

That junk-scientist has indicted the telcommunication industry with that ridiculous and utterly meaningless remark -- but the music is cool.

  • Hi Biron,

It is always fantastic to hear back from fans of Full Signal.

I would like to start off by asking you to watch the film again (and no, not just during commercial breaks on Fox News), or go to FullSignalMovie.com and Google these "anti-science professionals" who you are so quick to disrespect and cast aside.

IF you had watched the whole film (and I mean a legal copy not one which lacks subtitles in the last 1/5 of the film), you would know these people are not anti-technology, and I think it is fair to listen to independent scientists who have NOTHING to gain from this technology being regulated vs scientists who are on Telecom payrolls.

Just a quick note about me, you forgot to mentioned I was a CBS News producer as well, and FYI, the series I produced for Jazeera Doc Channel (a channel that regularly features documentaries by Israelis) was aimed at exposing the Arab world to other aspects of Israel (besides just the uniform and the M16), just part of a long TV career aimed at coexisting peacefully as neighbors.

And now to the most serious accusation: I am going to assume you are simply ignorant, and not one of those extremists in favor of ethnically cleansing Israel of Arabs (although judging by your comment, you could very well be).

Issifya is an Arab village INSIDE Israel. The residents of this village serve in the Israeli Army (many of whom are highly decorated), and they are, without a doubt Israeli citizens. Furthermore (and the reason I know you watched a bootlegged copy), the narrator (who happens to be a retired Israeli Colonel) in Arabic that is not subtitled on bootleg copies describes a situation which ACTUALLY HAPPENED. It was all over the ISRAELI news, and we used it in Full Signal because it was a poignant example of how government and telecom colluded and the result was a lot of sick and dying people.

One more reason to go back and watch the film again...did you happen to miss the detailed coverage of the religious JEWISH apartment building and how they too are suffering?

I would seriously caution you to think twice before using the phrase "blood libel" you clearly don't know what it means, and don't realize the connotations.

Thank you for your response and insults.

It said something like "people were upset and decided if the law is against us.." in the scene with the riot police.

I saw the part featuring the Chasid describing how the telecom came on Shabbat and that nobody could protest. I assume that was filmed somewhere in Brooklyn. While I wish her and everyone else in your film a complete recovery from their ailments, you have not proven she suffers from the antenna any more than she suffers from bad mezzuzot.

There was another family who brought in the "consultant" who slept in a tent. What is to say that's not a clever sales pitch for selling tents to that frightened family?

Interviewing people on the tail of the paranoia distribution curve is not science.

Your statement that these "independent scientists" have nothing to gain is absurd. They are cashing in on the burgeoning fearmongering business. Consultants peddling tents, charlatan's selling elixers, lawyers pursuing all manner of cases. Planning boards hire consultants that extort fees from telecoms who by requiring them to prove they need to provide service under the ludicrous proposition that the telecoms pay rent and maintenance on equipment to provide unnecessary service.

Ms. Levitt authors books on the subject. And here is another vacuous quote of hers, this one appearing on one of your recommended links, ElectroMagnetic Health:

"The problem is, man-made electromagnetic exposures aren’t 'normal.' They are artificial artifacts, with unusual intensities, signaling characteristics, pulsing patterns, and wave forms, that don’t exist in nature."

Well neither Mozart's Sonatas nor Picasso's cubism appear in nature -- will these make you ill? Speculation that something different will harm you without any justification -- that's JUNK SCIENCE.

I would like to get a radiation meter. In my house, there are several items that radiate orders of magnitude beyond radiation from cellular antenna. My neighbor's router registers -76dBm on my router. I only wish my Verizon signal was so strong.

Consider that NONE of the most well-known organizations, the ACS or WHO have attributed cancer to cell towers. Even Ms. Levitt acknowledges there is no perfect cause and effect match.

Yet there is a remarkable cause and effect match in Issafya. Those hidden Israeli antenna must be particularly nasty according to your "scientists."

Clustering of that nature is unprecented (and I am sure non-existent). Health organizations around the world would be all over this. Where was this documented?

You are all over the map with your science and even in your own interviews. You claim on one hand you do not want to fearmonger. On the other hand, your Israeli antennas are absolutely diabolical.

I have to chuckle as many off you complaining are fueling the need with your demand for smartphones and tablets and Wi-Fi. It is not the Telecom Industry Big company bad guys it is the publics demand for cellphone and electric services. You can't have one without the other and if you fight you will drive the costs of service up.
