The Friends were honored to host Jody LePage at the library, talking about Sylvia Bell White's story, recounted in *Sister*, the book they wrote together. Ms. White is no longer able to make public appearances, but Jody LePage's presentation will included recordings of Ms. White's oral history of her life.

From the segregated South in the 1940s, to Milwaukee during and since the 1950s, Sister recounts Sylvia Bell White’s unrealized dream to become a nurse, her work in those fields that WERE open to an African-American woman at that time – and how life turned upside down when a Milwaukee police officer killed her younger brother, Daniel, in 1958. The family’s quest for justice, and the sweep of history encompassing Sylvia’s life – from her enslaved grandparents to the present day – provides a riveting narrative, and an important witness to the past and ongoing struggle for civil rights.
