This is the video for the new song ‘Shower Over Moon Street’ by Michael McKell. It’s the single on his upcoming album – also entitled ‘Shower Over Moon Street’. I’ve been allowed to preview the finished promo here.

About Michael McKell:
Michael McKell began his career as a singer songwriter with recording deals with Phonogram, EMI and Warner Brothers. More recently he has starred in the West End production of Tonight’s the Night and is best know for his TV work in Murder Investigation Team and as Nick West in BBC’s Doctors.

Tech Info:
The video was shot entirely on the Panasonic GH1 camera. I shot with a mixture of stock lens and Canon FD primes. ND’s were Cokin P filter system. We shot in 720 for eveything which allowed us the oportunity to slo-mo anything we wanted to later.

The edit was done in Edius 5 and the picture was graded using Magic Bullet Looks in After Effects.

Please feel free to contact me to talk about hiring me and my rates etc.

Very, very nice. Great grading. I noticed a brief glitch - at 3:06 on the extreme right edge - white line.
  • Joe Shaw plus 2 months ago
Thanks for the grading comment. Don't know how you spotted that white line! Insanely good eyesight/observation!

This is a really interesting piece of work. I assume working with an actor/singer/ songwriter he brought loads of ideas to the table and that these were accommodated. But the interesting thing was the range of shots and angles that were prepd for and the editing must have taken longer than the shoot. Masterly put together capturing the passion of the song, the skills of the actor and full of atmosphere. Would love to see the production notes. He must be absolutely delighted. Thanks Joe

Steve, the edit took a fair bit longer than the shoot. There was a lot of footage. In fact, better prep would reduce that - but this was a good experiment.

  • what did you use for the subtle movements? was it some sort of dolly?
  • Joe Shaw plus 2 months ago
Simon, I used a slider for the movement. Home-made version. Bit hit and miss, but enough usable footage from it.

Well done Joe!! I like the changes, i think it flows much better now and we feel a good progression through to the end! I particulary like the long penultimate shot of him by the fire, you really feel his thoughts working through! The grade is very good and it makes the whole piece feel very composed and effective. One comment would be to add a few tiny creeps in some of the more static shots, just to keep pulling you in! nice one!!!!
