Another thoughtful film attempting to bridge the gap between the audience and a distant reality by placing the events in their own context. Good stuff.

one of the best UK short films of the year, in my humble opinion... the film managed to shift the exact feeling of ordinary Palestinians on Israeli checkpoints around the west Bank, reflecting that the pain is unified, and the injustices also has the same source, what ever face it has..
    A must to see...

Brilliant work. Lovely concept, well shot and edited. Keeps up the sense of disbelief/mystery through the metaphor really well.

Just got back from two weeks shooting (video!) in east Jerusalem, so the story hits home even harder.

    Wanna see more.

When did Israeli Hospital become Palestinian Hospital? Propaganda as usual. Common Sense is thrown out the window replaced by feelings?! If you don't prioritize health by not building hospital, you don't have the right to expect free healthcare.

Outstanding work. Reminded me of when I was first shown the wall being built by the Israelis; to keep the Palestinians out. Then, it was impossible for me not to draw parallels with the rise of national socialism in Germany. This work induced the same revulsion I felt; when a rather too proud Israeli was giving me a guided tour of that awful wall and bragging about a final solution to the "Palestinian problem".

i was a medic in the isreal army. in my base i helped and evacuate meny Palestinian in an ambulance to a isreal hospital, meny times if the injury was slightly dangerous we called out an army helicopter for quick evacuation. we helped them the same as we helped any other person, no matter what race. this is just another propaganda, only in a nice suit.

To those who think that this is propaganda or that this depicts access to Israeli hospitals where Palestinians should not be anyway.
Having worked and lived in the Middle East, specifically working on ambulance related issues, I must say that this accurately depicts the troubles Palestinians face obtaining healthcare in Palestinian medical facilities throughout the West Bank as well as East Jerusalem, not Israeli medical facilities; which is a whole other issue. People often have to resort to using their own vehicles for transport of ill and injured, because ambulance response is delayed, as they have to go through the checkpoints, or take lengthy alternate routes, both on the way to the patient as well as when taking them to the hospital.
To the gentleman who said that he was a medic in the IDF, I would agree that there are a number like himself, who do provide care based on the humanitarian need rather than race, he and those like him should be commended. There are also Palestinian ambulance services who provide care to the settlers involved in motor vehicle collisions along the roads in the West Bank, for the same humanitarian reasons. The majority of Palestinians and Israelis want peace, and could probably have reached it, if it were not for the few in each culture who control the politics.

From the moment I saw the woman wearing a keffiay I instantly knew we were in for a propaganda ride.

The hard, cold fact of the matter is that checkpoints have been instituted for one reason and one reason only.... to prevent suicide bombers and other terrorists from entering Israel to slaughter innocent men, women and children. Period.

And you know what, it's worked.

There is only one side to blame for the checkpoints and that is the Palestinians!!!! If both Hamas & Fatah would spend their resources and energy educating their populations to live in Peace with the Israelis - rather than rasing a generation of aspiring martyrs, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in today.

Projects like this one are what we need here in the middle-east to get to humans who think we are terrorists or whatever..thank you guys for taking the initiative...i guess we will be producing similar work when our stupid leaders leave us in peace and stop refraining us from being creative by busting our economic situations..well, and when israel decides to act rationally, because really, what they are doing is far from rationality....its the biggest insult to human rights !

    Thank you again. much appreciated

Put together well... However propaganda and you're indeed only seeing one side of the story. Of course the Palestine's will twist their story into making you feel sorry for them... Maybe people should read up on their history before they go getting all "warm and fuzzy". Yeah, maybe they do need projects like this in the middle east... So we see more people rise up to just get killed. How about, they stop causing a ruckus and start building their own damn hospitals. Again ... Nice video!

this is cheap corrupt propaganda video playing on pure sentimental judgement. what's the best way to get some attention for a young "talented" director/artist/writer ? right ! get up and speak frightlessly about the Israeli oppression and insult to human rights of Palestinian people! THE WORLD MUST KNOW !
come on, I'm so tired of this bullshit. Come and be a doctor in a Palestinian village if you want to change the world. may be you'll get the more realistic picture of what's happenning here. don't forget that Israel and Palestinians are in state of war, even if it may be called Low Intensity Conflict or whatever. Israel is making an enormous effort to ensure the normal life of the civilians in the Right bank - much more than any other country would do in this situation. I'm spending a few weeks a year at these checkposts - and I've never witnessed a person in need of urgent medical assistance ambulance being withheld at a checkpost.
and ! we are way more charming than these young soldiers in the video :)
  • Pierre 2 years ago
I don't know how you can insinuate that trying to highlight a perceived injustice is an act purely motivated by the selfish "attention" of an aspiring filmmaker, but if this really is bullshit, then you're claiming that a case like this has never happened before or that it isn't a common occurrence and I don't think you can do that.

Through some brief initial Googling, I've found several Palestinian Medical Relief Society sources whose claims support this video's concerns, mainly that of Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP who stated in 2007:

"Israeli checkpoints are the[sic] frequent scenes of Palestinian deaths. Since September 2000, 69 Palestinian women have given birth at Israeli checkpoints. Five women and 35 newborn babies have died as a result.

A recent study on perinatal and infant mortality published together with the John Hopkins University found that four out of every 1,000 Palestinian children born die before the age of one, a factor linked to Israel's matrix of movement restrictions in the West Bank."
    tr.im/JEj2 / tr.im/JEj6

I find this film extremely well executed and thought provoking. I would like a source on those statistics though.
  • werter 2 years ago
First, I'm not saying NOTHING NEVER happened or what was the ONLY motive of a filmmaker. It's just so trite and predictable - an over-pious european concerned of "Israel's matrix of movement restrictions in the West Bank". All this issue gets an unproportional attention from the media. I say, there are much much worse things happening in the world!
    e.g: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8432653.stm
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_casualties_of_the_War_in_Afghanistan_%282001%E2%80%93present%29
    Civilians killed as a result of U.S-led military action: 5,317 - 8,109.
Are you concerned about this, Pierre ? Do you think Afghanistan is or ever was an immediate and real threat on Europe ?

thought provoking ??? obviously this video hasn't changed anybody's mind on the object. nobody's asking why there are checkpoints in west bank, or what can be done..
  • Pierre 2 years ago
There definitely are much worse things happening, but that isn't the concern of this video. It's concentrating on one piece of information, one subject. It's not aiming to comment on the entire occupation, just the restrictions and mistreatment of civilians at military checkpoints and that's a subject worth exploring and drawing attention to.
  • sheila menon 10 months ago
Hi, thanks for the back up Pierre :) The references for the stats are listed in the credits. There's a lot of information out there on the big wide web, and not all of it is true or unbiased (on both sides of the case). So we did sift through A LOT of research and figures to make sure we only used credible sources, before settling on these end statements. Sx

Maybe if the Palestinians would stop lobbing missiles into Israel to kill innocent civilians, there wouldn't be a need for so many checkpoints. Just a thought.

This film is pure propaganda and nothing else.

However, it might be a hint of the future of health care in America once Obama's Health Care bill is fully in place -- especially the part about not being able to get an ambulance, or not being able to gain access to hospital services. Triage, you know. Gotta keep costs under control.

Nice film production, tho. I love good propaganda films.
