Wherein we discuss religious liberty in Turkey, while having tea outside the Grand Bazaar.

Next time you go to Turkey, and need a cameraman, let me know! I was just there in September visiting my family and friends over there.

I'd be interested to hear what effect you think the overthrow of the Ottoman Empire had on religious tolerance. The Ottomans had a long history of encouraging religious diversity, and the Greek and Armenian Christians in Anatolia didn't seem to face undeniable hostility until after the Nationalistic movement that sprung up around Atatürk. Having recently read Eric Hoffer's "The True Believer" (while I was in Turkey, actually) I can't help but wonder if the modern intolerance that has been associated with Islam is more of an artifact of nationalistic philosophies.
