Summary: This paper charts the expectations and experiences of participants in the OT12 MOOC where participants jointly explored the potential of crowdsourcing open translation of Open Educational Resources (OER) by trying out a range of open translation tools that facilitate online collaboration across time zones and geographical distances. Discussion forums, synchronous online conferences, recorded podcasts and the tasks themselves were designed to provide some input and share views on: the ethics and practicalities of openness in education and translating; the nature of translation; and the issue of quality assurance in open translation.
