Escape
The IDEO Palo Alto play team cast this second of two videos in a future where the experience of play is shaped by the context of expensive electricity – where schools make it mandatory for children to play in order to offset the expensive fossil fuel charges. Essie, the main character, goes so far as to steal energy from a fellow student so that she can later animate her own pretend world, which is... entirely dependent on electric power.

neat video.. lovely style
Also, is IDEO's outlook on the future really this bleak? Will we really have to sap minuscule bits of energy via ancient sewing machine mechanisms from children fidgeting their feet under their desk?
Or, is this more about anticipating how we might deal with a less-than-ideal future of energy solutions? A sort of "What if there is no miracle alternate fuel source break through?"
I would love to hear other's interpretations of this!
Thanks for the kind words about “escape.” I’m a member of IDEO’s design community and I lead the team that created this hypothetical vision of future play. You are spot on regarding the “what if there is no miracle” exploration. This part of a series of IDEO design community generated “what if’s” about climate change and human experience.
If you want to see the same young girl “Essie” play in an alternate future where the U.S. has taken a more proactive approach to reducing carbon emissions check out “free ride” on the Living Climate Change website.

As for the music I’m guilty as charged and loving it. If you are going to have a nightmare why not go all the way and include some scary clowns.
But the scenario is very realistic, not only with playing children..What about to generate the energy when designers create?
