First edit of a wedding I shot recently with the Canon 7D. Will be going back and doing an audio edit later, with ambient sound and a composed soundtrack.

Started out at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC, ended up at the Foundry in LIC, after many inches of rain.

Video details:
Shot with the Canon 7D at 24p
24mm 1.4 Mark II
50mm 1.2
24-105mm f4

Shot at 1/50th of a second
Most of the daytime shots are between ISO 100-400
Most of the night shots are between ISO 2500-4000
Stabilized with a Zacuto Rapid Fire
Lit with a LitePanel Micro and warming filter
Audio (in a future edit) with a Rode VideoMic and Edirol R09

did you always use open fstop?
    Thanks
  • yeah all the lenses were pretty much wide open all day. the 7D definitely has less DOF than the 5D.

Great job Josh. Any conclusions when comparing video to the 5D?

I like a lot of this. It's very natural and not too posy. Only thing I would say is that the music doesn't fit the liveliness and good humor of a lot of the shots. But nice editing and shooting!
  • yeah the audio is going to be overhauled soon. I have a couple different composer friends that I am going to pass it to, and also need to bring out the ambient audio.

Very nice. I love the picture you can get out of the 7D. Are you having any issues with the 12 minute record time? How did you handle it during the ceremony?

Have you heard anything about heating up or rather people having issues?

Another question for you. The description says the video was shot at 24p, but the QuickTime file says it's set at 29.97 fps.

Is that because of editing and export? Was it edited, by any chance in Final Cut Express, which doesn't handle 24p? Thanks very much.
  • I am assuming it was on export. I actually just put this together in iMovie 09 and exported with quicktime. I had send another clip as 24p, but it looked very stroby even though I had shot at 1/50th. I don't know what vimeo is doing to it on their end, but I am happier with the look of this.

Nice captured. Did you notice the red light dots at the dinner scenes? I found the UV filters are making these ghost things but if you shoot without it's much better. Or if you use a mattebox things can improve.

    Anyways great work!
  • I have noticed them. A mattebox is on the list :)

Hey, I'm a rookie with video, but had a couple questions about the 7D. Did you use manual focus on all the shots, or did you do the "half press" on the shutter button occasionally shooting? I know the half-press works BEFORE recording, just wondering if it works DURING shooting as well. IF so, any thoughts on how that works, good/bad? Also, was it all hand held footage? Thanks...
  • everything is totally manual focus. the quick focus just doesn't do it for me. it has taken a lot of practice, but I am starting to get the hang of follow focus. there is plenty of out of focus footage in the outtakes though :)

Wow! Awesome shots. After seeing this, I have to get the 7d. I own the original 5D, so its nice that i can use my lenses. Also thinking about the LitePanel Micro. I have a Canon HV30, with the red rock micro m2 adapter. I hate all the set up time with it though(Aligning it and setting the back focus). Again, awesome work!

Awesome Video man. whats even crazier is that it looks this good having just been put through imovie. Very promising as I'm about to get my hands on a 7D. The other, and slightly more odd question I have, is... and correct me if I am wrong.. but arent the bride and groom not supposed to see one another until the ceremony? I dunno.. maybe this is a different country or a different method of doing things from what i've always heard... but I found this slightly odd. But it sure LOOKed cool!

@Chris: a lot of couple opt to do a 'First Look' where they see each other before the ceremony. This gives the photog & video folks to get better shots of the couple before the day gets too crazy. Some couples do it some don't; it's all a matter of preference. I do like the anticipation / suspense of it all. it makes for great picts and footage.

Joshua, smokin job man. Doing a custom soundtrack will really put your work over the top. Kudos!

    Joshua,
Great video piece. Incredable sense of balance in your lighting. I noticed that you must have been using the soft diffusor as well as the color on the interior shots using the micro. The fall off was perfect and the levels using the dimmer gave just enough light. Well done. Also, your compositions are in fact beautiful as I felt like the story wasn't a bunch of quick cuts but more an opportunity for the viewer to feel a part of a beautifully choregraphed waltz with the main characters taking us thru their special day. Loved it.

How is the rapid-fire? If I were to go for a stablizer, this is the one although I'm going to see how well I can get on without first since it's pricey! Your shots are perfectly steady, which is encouraging. Did you get much fatigue?
  •
  • its pricey, but after shooting a few things with it, its totally worth it. I also picked up the Z-Finder at the Photo Expo here in NYC and it makes a world of difference in comfort level and ability to follow focus. next up is some sort of steadycam, the zeiss 50mm, and a glidetrack.

Fantastic work, Joshua. I'm sure the beautiful couple was really pleased with what you created for them.

Did you use any sort of optical viewfinder (such as the Zacuto Z-finder or the LCDVF)? And did you use a follow focus? Just curious to know what other (if any) equipment you had. If you didn't use either of those, this is even more impressive. Again, great job.
