No matter how hard Chunhua 春华 tried, they wouldn’t come back. She hadn’t tasted their sweet, pungent taste in years. Remembering the days when she would wander through the yard, fingers and lips stained dark red. She would pick them and put them in her dress pockets and always forget they were there. Her mother would yell at her for being so forgetful. She ruined so many dresses that Spring. But this year, something is different. Her beloved tree blooms but bears no fruit. The transience of the blossoms, their extreme beauty and quick death, reminded Chunhua 春华 of her own mortality. She would water the tree for hours, hoping to delay its inevitable passing, constantly looking at its top for new berries. Mono No Aware.
