I am a Convinced Universalist - William Barclay
These supposive Saints are a joke. They claim to speak for God and to state how God will Eternally Punish someone in Hell, when in reality, the terminology to does not even lend to such a belief.
As in the days of Jesus Christ, we have church leaders and religious authority speaking perverse things, acting as if they are the Mouthpiece of God. This is the group of people Christ had the most problems with.
Such a Joke. A Wesleyan refering to the 7 Ecumenical Councils as Authority stating that the 5th Ecumenical Council condemned Universalism. Here is what is wrong with this:
1. Wesleyans don't even accept the 7 Ecumenical Councils. They accept only 4. Yet, he is refering to the 5th Ecumenical Council. Is this a joke? Protestants are scitzophrenic. They are OK with the 7 Ecumenical Council and it benefits them, But then, they are against when they don't. Even this guy writes how the 7th one was "Sketchy".
Further, the 5th Ecumenical Council does not condemn Universalism. If it was the case, we would not a handful of Saint who were explicitly Universalists yet called "Orthodox".
2. In reality, the 5th Ecumenical Council was against a form of Origenism, which had nothing to do with Origen, but rather his followers. They made no mention of Universalism, nor spoke of its condemnation.
What we have is a bunch of people muddying the water around this topic. Yes, a certain form of Universalism was condemned, but not every type of Universalism. Just the type that has pre-existence of souls, reincarnation to put the person through multiple lives until they acheive salvation. Not, the normal, God uses Hell and the afterlife to bring people to repentence and salvation (which I believe in and many saints).
Rather we have a bunch of immature teachers and preachers that are not being entirely honest about the topic and instead would like just make sure you don't believe God will save all or most all (as I believe). Rather, they want to scare you away from Universalism to make sure you believe the Satanic theory of Hell (i.e. What most believe in, which is basically a merceless God torturing people forever and ever for no apparant reason).
The Eternal Torment viewpoint contradicts MANY Bible verses. Mercy endureth forever. Saviour of all people, especially those who believe. Restore all things. Every knee will bow.
Many are under the impression that Universalism was condemned as heresy in the 5th Eccumenical Council, but that is simply not the case. In reality, only Pre-existence of Souls was condemned.
It was the things added in by a ruler written 10 years before and not brought forth by the Council, which is claiming Universalism is wrong. It was not from the Council, so it should not be part of the documentation from the council.
These theologians are essentially doing what those in the Secular Scientific community do. The logical fallacy of Plea to authority and majority. They are playing on your ignorance, just like the elite do.
God does not care about their religious "authority". As is very clear, there were many "religious leaders" who were in authority at the time of Christ who were very directly against the true God.
God does not care about your "majority". Just because a Council Claimed authority as the "Orthodox Church" does not mean they did the Will of God. Even the Sanhedren claimed to be of God and represented the Jewish Faith, but failed miserably. How is it you think these churches of man will do any better?
Personally, I believe the 7 Eccumenical Councils barely stayed Orthodox. It was not them, but God that saved them. It was in spite of their efforts that we retained orthodoxy. If it was up to them, Universalism may have been condemned. But, God orchastrated the truth to come out IN SPITE of them. They were actually in the way of God, but God worked through them to bring forth the truth.
I could easily argue that they were not doing the will of God, because of the fact Jesus had to deal with all the religious leaders who were in "authority" and who were in "majority" at that time. It was a MINORITY of Pharisees that liked Jesus. It was only very few, who even gave their lives. The MAJORITY stayed in power.
But, as I said, they did the will of God, in spite of themselves.
