music by Samuel Pellman
video by Miranda Raimondi
This brief work was inspired by a Hubble telescope image of the nebula NGC 2818 and is a piece of visual music in which the processes for synthesizing the sound and the video footage are closely linked. The plucked instruments that present the melody and occasionally strum in the background are based on a physical model of plucked strings developed by Harm Visser for the Kyma system. The pitches and rhythms of the accompanying pattern are determined by second-order Markov chains. The music is tuned in a 5-limit just intonation.
