This is part one of a five-part video project titled, "An Unknown Lesson and other stories." Shot in India in 2009 by artists Adam Frelin and Michele Kong, this project grew out of a desire to work on something more altruistic and socially engaged than each artist’s individual practice. The first significant decision of this self-generated collaborative project was to participate in the global impact volunteer program Unite for Sight, which “empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness.” Upon arriving in New Delhi, it became very clear that there was substantial existing documentation of the restorative eye care efforts of the volunteer program’s affiliate Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital. The focus of our project therefore turned to those living with blindness in a country where there is little to no support for people with disabilities.
