These Samyangs are great... Can't wait for the 14mm to come out as that will be like 22mm with the crop factor.

Hi Matt, I hope to get the new 14mm for a test when it is available.
Indeed no better value for money.

welcome in overcracking world!! nice pictures, if you move the camera do you have the same D90 problems? a rapid pan for example or a subjective view.. You are really a TEST man!! before every purchase, I'll call you..
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
Hi Ale, indeed the world of overcranking is fascinating. Wish I could overcrank my life... :)

Jello is there if you are wild with the camera, but since I know your shooting style you will not suffer.

This camera is in a different league to the D90.

    Many thanks!

one more thing... your shotting in 50fps needs a conform? like with Pana DVCProHD.. if you have a timeline in 25 fps and edit the original file what happen? normal or slow motion? thanks..
  •
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
-Footage into the Premiere 1280x720 25p timeline.
    -Un-tick the frame blending.
    -Slowdown to 50%.

    Basta.

The footage BEFORE slowing down will play in a normal speed in a 25p timeline.

    Ciao.

    J.
  •
  • Alessandro Beltrame pro 2 years ago
I think you need to conform the film clips... it's not the same to have on timeline the 50% of speed.. in your case the frame are interpolated, but always 25.. if you conform from 50 to 25, you have 50 frame really for 1 second.
There we can see the overcrack result!! Send to me an original small file that I'll try with MAC, if you want.
    ciao caro...
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
    Dear Ale.

Did both methods and Premiere gave me a smoother results slowing down in 50% on a 25p timeline no interpolation.

Will be happy to send you some original MOV files, no problem.

Great video, but one thing: When I watch this at work I'm noticing a few "lost frames" during playback - a jerky look when people are walking across the screen as though frames are being skipped here and there. At first I thought it was my older work computer but it's not typical for other videos. Is this a result of the rendering or issue with the memory card maybe not being super fast that was used to capture the video, etc?
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
Hi Greg, thanks for watching the clip!

Here, the same file is playing from the PS3 on a 50inch plasma without any dropped frame!

I would have never uploaded a clip with dropped frame... :)

With the Canon 7d like other memory card VDSLR and camcorders, there is no need to "capture the video" since it is already in a digital form file. Just copy it to your editing hard disk and start editing.

    Thanks!

Great movie, I saved it. Did you convert your MOV files or did you just place them onto the timeline, edit and render. I hope the later....... thanks
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
    Hi RogerB1,

I am on a PC editing platform.
All files were converted to Cineform AVI's then imported to Adobe Premiere for editing.

Thanks for watching the video and I hope you have a chance to play it on a big screen, it looks nice for a modestly priced VDSLR camera....

wow. beautiful stuff. super smooth slow motion. i loved it!

how did you find shooting with an 85mm on the crop sensor? Obviously it helped give you some creamy shallow DOF, but was it helpful getting you in closer to your subjects or were you finding yourself too close and having to move back often. It's a problem i have with the 85mm f/1.8 on my 500D.

also, I see you were using a few ND filters. were they enough to let you shoot wide open at f/1.4 or did you have to stop the lens down at all?
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
    Hi John.

First, thanks a lot for watching the video!

I love the Samyang fast 85mm lens. Nothing can beat price/performance with that lens.

The camera/lens are new with me and I mostly used the lens as a "full body portrait" not a "face only" one.

In two days I will use it in a real world project and will be smarter if it is limiting my "creativity and needs".

Two ND filters (0.9, 0.6) were used most of the time in order to achieve a wide or nearly wide aperture like I wanted.

All the best and thanks again!

Tasty! Great to read your blog posting on DSLR newshooter as well. I am now thinking the DV Multirig looks like the best option out there in terms of cost and performance. One thing though - are you using the Magic Lantern Hack with the 7D as well? According to ML it don't work yet - or does the latest Canon 7D firmware update solve that?

    Thanks,

    Ben
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
Hi Ben, thank you for posting a comment!

-The last I heard from DVTEC (the manufacture of DVmultyrig) is that they are about to slightly update their model in order to fit the rig to the VDSLR world better.

-I am about to get a rig from Vocas (vocas.com/links/dslrrig-link.htm) and test it. This rig is more expensive but might be the answer to my different needs.

-ML for the 7d is not ready yet as far as I know.

    Thanks!

    Johnnie

  • Ben Sherriff 2 years ago
    Hi Johnnie,

You're welcome! Good that they may be about to update it.... the rig from Vocas looks great. My feelings are that an all in one solution like that especially for documentary or ENG it might be worth extra cost.

Any ideas on where this available in the uk?

    Cheers,

    Ben
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 2 years ago
    Hi Ben.

The Vocas will not come cheap!.

Most of it but the shoulder mount is already available. (end of the month for the shoulder mount).

According to Vocas site this is their dealer:

    Pyser - SGI Ltd.
    Homepage pyser-sgi.com
    E-mail broadcast@pyser-sgi.com
    Telephone +(44) 1732 864111
    Fax +(44) 1732 865544

Will check with my Vocas contact tomorrow and will let you know if there are more dealers.

    All the best!.

    Hello again Johnnie,

Thanks a lot man, had a look at their site but no prices on there so yeh definitely expensive!

I'm probably not going to get the kit for a little while to come yet so I'm waiting to see what other solutions are around in a few months time.

Thanks again and I'll be sure to check out more of your work on vimeo!

Did you use manual focus all the time? Is the LCD good enough for focusing? Did you use additional tools like HoodLoupe or Z-Finder?
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 1 year ago
    Dear Michael.
Yes, manual focus used at all times. Auto focus is not possible with the 7d when shooting video.
LCD is fine. Higher LCD quality and/or any camera focusing assist during filming would have been a great help...
Z-finder is my current viewfinder. If you have no glasses/contact lenses, LCDVF will do a great job in a reduced price.

    Thanks again!

  • I can't help but wonder what the same footage would have looked like with the shutter set to 1/50.

The images are beautiful. How cool that you captured natural falling leaves. That is a very rare thing to me. It almost never occurs in California.

Do you recommend the 7D over the T2i for people like me that want to shoot mostly video?
  • Johnnie Behiri plus 1 year ago
    Hi Freakshow P.

1/50 would not give me as smooth picture as I could get with the 1/100.

I have no experience with the T2i (even though those are very similar camera video wise).

As a professional I like the challenge working with the 7d. If you are looking for "home video" camera, I am sure that with a bit of practice and understanding the limits imposed by that kind of camera while shooting video, eventually you will end up getting nice footage.

    All the best.
