5D : Imagination: Visual Arts and Science at FMX pt 2

This panel explores the future of the curated confluence of the Visual Arts, New Media and Technology. It will provide an unprecedented investigation into digital media’s impact on contemporary art and visual culture, at a moment when those effects are only beginning to be explored by the society producing them.

Chris Scoates, Director, University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach; Co-Director, 5D: the Future of Immersive Design Conference
Chris Scoates is co-curating, with Alex McDowell, a series of exhibitions titled "Project Lab: New art and Technology". The first exhibition "Sound Oasis" was an outdoor 3D audio environment with Martyn Ware and twelve international sound artists. The second, "Tamper: Gestural Interface for Cinematic Design", was a participatory work by scientist John Underkoffler. Chris is currently organizing an exhibition with Brian Eno titled "77 Million Paintings" and an installation by lighting designer Andi Watson.
Forthcoming publication: "Bullet Proof....I Wish I Was: The Lighting and Stage Design of Andi Watson".

David Gryn, , Director Artprojx, a curated artists’ film space; Art Consultant, artprojx.com
David Gryn works to draw new audiences to the arts and has built a strong international reputation for bringing leading and emerging contemporary artists’ films into public cinemas through Artprojx. In 2003 Artprojx initiated its own artworld creative marketing platform – presenting artists’ film/video and documentaries in the cinema, garnering widespread enthusiasm from the art establishment and general public alike. Artprojx has also created and planned special marketing events and activities for major international art museums and institutions, and served as a consultant to various art venues and corporate entities on marketing, audience development and strategy. Grin launched Artprojx Space - a one-year gallery project space in London that ran a programme of exhibitions and hosted experimental one-off projects with artists - in 2008. In 2009 David Gryn is establishing a regular series of artists’ film screenings as Artprojx Matinee Presentation.

Tino Schaedler, Architect, Art Director
Graduating with honours from the University of Hannover in architecture, Schaedler also studied at the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam, UC Berkeley, and Filmschool in Vancouver. He worked at Daniel Libeskind and Barkow Leibinger Architects for three years until his career took a turn and led him to film design. Since then he has worked as an Art Director for digital sets on motion pictures such as Tim Burton‘s "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "V for Vendetta", and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Along with curating a traveling exhibition on progressive film design, Schaedler is currently working on a book and regularly delivers talks at universities and conventions worldwide on digital set design. He is also the Co-Founder of NAU, a design collective positioned between architecture and film.

Martyn Ware, Soundscape Designer, Producer, Illustrious Company, Future of Sound
In 1978, Martyn Ware formed the band The Human League. He established the music production company and label British Electric Foundation in 1980 and formed Heaven 17 the same year. Ware has written, performed and produced two Human League, two BEF, and nine Heaven 17 albums. He founded Illustrious Co. Ltd. with Vince Clarke in 2001 to explore the creative and commercial possibilities of their unique three-dimensional sound technology in collaboration with fine artists, the performing arts, and corporate clients around the world. Martyn Ware produces and presents a series of events entitled “Future of Sound” around the world, and created sonic architectural works at the British Pavilion at the Venice Architectural Biennale in 2006. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of London, a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, a patron of Arts & Business, and a member of the LA-based international think-tank group Matter. He also lectures extensively on music production, technology, at universities and colleges across the world and runs the world-leading soundbranding agency ID.

Rebecca and Mike, Designers, Lateral thinkers
Rebecca and Mike create entertaining and ruthlessly pure ideas; they are lateral thinkers whose work is uncompromised and interventionist. Their projects are principally within the art and advertising sectors, and aim to promote and develop products and services from across all market sectors. Their work is also exhibited in galleries. They have been an independent niche two-person proposal for over ten years (and in many ways an indefinable one, too). In 2003, Japan’s IDEA magazine wrote that their work “defies definition in existing categories like product and graphic design, and reveals new angles on the essential nature of the phenomena that lie before our eyes.” Their work is characterized not only by the end-product but also by their unformulaic approach to solving problems. They have worked on projects for John Galliano at Dior, the British Government, and Coca-Cola. Recently, they worked with Paul McCartney on his platinum-selling project Memory Almost Full.
