nice work. really like the fast motion at 00:36.

Can I ask, was your zoom all the way to 17mm at 00:46? (I'm just wondering how wide of a lens you need on a 7d, to actually go wide...)
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
    thanks Byron. yup, 17mm

That's cool. Was most of the noise down to shooting at 400-6400 ISO? I'm just comparing it to the shots by another guy shooting at night on the 7D.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
most of the clips are shot at 6400. at 400 the noise is not significant

You have a keen eye for composition and effect. Well Done! I'm keen to see a ripper B&W fashion or cosmetic thing. You know, shallow DOF, slomo .... The whole bit.

I noticed that you framed a lot of street ads i.e. Armani, Izod, etc... Did you do it consciously or just a mistake?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
I saw them, alright. almost impossible to avoid them without compromising composition, many ads on the west side

poor quality in low light !
    i prefer 5D !!!
    definetely
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
keep in mind it was almost pitch dark and most clips were shot at 6400, yes the 5D is better in extreme low light but the noise does not bother me too much

Good movie, but I prefer my D90 or the 5DMkII,

Can you tell me something, where can I find this place at 2:30 min ?

It seems to be great for a Timelapse !

    Thanks for sharing =)

thanks Francisque. certainly. it is around 14th street and 10th ave, can't really miss it

Beautiful work as always Mike, Thanks for sharing and showing us the capabilities and limitations of the 7D next on my purchase list, so really appreciate it!
  • MidnightStar Video plus 2 months ago
PS: Do you feel that the 7D or 5D gives you atonomy when shooting out in public like this since most would assume you are just shooting stills. One thing I hope for when I get mine.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
thanks MidnightStar. Definitely, an advantage, one does not think of a filming dslr

    Mike,
I've been waiting for someone to do a video about the Hi-Line because I think it's such a cool thing. Although, I don't feel like I really saw the Hi-line in this piece. For non New Yorkers who do not know what it is, they need shots to get more of a feel of the Hi-line. Now this made been more of a test shot video, I don't know, it didn't say so in the description. I'd like to see shots from the ground looking up at the Hi-line, some movement under that hotel would be nice (but I understand if it's not in the budget), a little time lapse, various pans or statics at various points, shots of people waking and shots from the street of people looking up at this crazy new thing? I thought your piece was nice, these are just my humble suggestions.

Also, I hate to burst everyones bubble but that 7D is quiet a bit noisy compared to the 5DMK2.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
thanks for the input Steve. totally agree, it does not show the high line. this was a spontaneous shoot, the light was right and I was curious how the 7D holds up at iso 6400. will email you once I update the video with part two.

For my money, Mike, you get the rhythm of the City, the giddiness and the gaudiness of it. Whenever the horn-blowing and the rest get the best of me, I can come back to your clips for a fix.

    thanks Ray!

So at 6400 ISO the 5Dii would have significantly less noise?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
def has less noise, it depends on the subject matter and lighting structure some clips here esp toward the end, are shot at almost no light

Thanks for making this. I'm a documentary filmmaker and recently purchased the 5dmkII for the low-light ability because some of my work is based in the Amazon. I was worried I purchased the wrong Canon DSLR until I saw this. I'm glad someone finally made something showing true low-light results with the 7D. The camera is great for many things, but low-light work is not one of them. Glad to know! Relieved some of my consumer anxiety!

I love the film Mike. My few days in NYC in the summer weren't really enough and I have promised myself another trip at a slower pace & without teenagers in tow. Get a chance to see a little more than the tourist haunts.

I think the noise is a little too distracting for me at 6400 in colour. In B&W it holds up much better because it looks more like grain - less obviously electronic.

The closest thing I have to compare on the 5D is High Roller vimeo.com/6509796. Not 100% sure what the ISO was but the stills from the same time say 3200 @ f1.4 and the in-car stuff was with a 15 f2.8 so I think it would have been at least 3200 and possibly 6400. Even after having to be vigourously "de-oranged" the noise seems less apparent to my eyes.

Philip Bloom did an improvised test for us in Dublin when he had the prototype 7D. I can't remember the stats but what I do recall is that, after looking very much the same for the first few clips, as the room darkened, the image brightness on the 7D seemed to fall off that of the 5D.

Bear in mind that by this point it was properly dark - lest we lose our perspective about these remarkable cameras. I would be interested to see if this is apparent with production models though. Maybe it is time for your "Jello Rig" to go nocturnal ;-)
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
thanks Andrew. not sure why, probably watched to many old movies, noise never bothers me, the option to shoot at night is far more important. by the way, only the last bw clip (close up) was shot at iso 6400, the bw clips at the beginning at iso 400 and are totally clean. sure the 5d2 is a bit better in low light but does it matter? finally we are getting equipment that can record in conditions we could only dream about a couple years ago
  • Andrew Howe plus 2 months ago
Only in absolute terms and to give us 5D owners some crumb of comfort in our 24/60p less world. Because these cameras can still capture images, it easy for the viewer to forget that to the camera man's eye, it is not low-light...its bloody dark :)

I took shots in similar lighting conditions 10 years ago on DV. They look fine as long as you like monochrome green and weird glowing eyes.

Does it matter? I like to watch your films full screen and unscaled. Watched like that it distracted me from the action. Watched from this page, especially if I had not made the fatal error of scanning the comments first, it would not have.

The worst case scenario though would definitely be you thinking "I won't shoot this because the noise will bug Andy". I would rather continue my NY education through your films on whichever of your large fleet of cameras you to chose to use ;)

WOW very nice! Im new to photography and video and I did not realize you could shoot video with a camera now! Can someone please recommend if I should just get the Canon D7 or similar or a full on video cam like a Canon S11. My budget is below $2000 and would like HD quality. Thanks for any info.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
    get the 7d!
  • Andrew Howe plus 2 months ago
If this is something you plan to be a serious new pass-time then the 7D is the state-of-the-art DSLR for both video and stills. It particularly suits those looking for a "film look".

DSLRs do have their downsides though. They are big and heavy and need a lot of glass to match the S11's zoom range. They are also trickier to get steady shots with. For casual use they are probably overkill. You also need more will-power than I possess if you are going to stop yourself from buying accessories for it that don't blow your budget. Persevere though and the results are stunning as Mike's films demonstrate.

Somewhere in between the 7D and S11 is the Lumix GH1. If you like the concept of having very good video and stills capability in a single device with the flexibility of interchangeable lenses but the easier operation of a camcorder then the GH1 makes a good case for itself.

I would find yourself a good, patient dealer and give them all a good try together. If you already own some fast CompactFlash and SD cards, take them along so you can take footage/stills back at home. The built in screens are not really capable of showing the differences properly. It will also let you check that you have compatible playback and editing devices as this can be a hidden cost of the wonderful world of HD.
  • Erik Aukerman 1 month ago
Thanks Andrew for the great info. I am just starting out and I would like to get the best of both world although I would be more into video. Do you know if the S11 can do still shots, maybe not as good as a DSLR but better than a cybershot or something similar. I would like to take stills from time to time and my budget is very limited. I also looked into the DMC-GH1K and it looks very nice is that the one you are recommending? Both the S11 and the DMC-GH1K are within my budget the 7D only sells as the body alone and that might not be an option since I would know yet what lens to get and would push me over my budget.

Thanks for any more info, it is much appreciated.
  • Andrew Howe plus 1 month ago
The S11 can take stills, but spec-wise, you are only at the budget compact level. Fine for snaps, but can't match the quality and creative control offered by the DSLRs in stills mode.

Has anyone tried the Nikon D300s to compare it to the Canon? I was considering going this way because of the investment I have in lenses for still work. Any comments? I am especially interested in the low-light rendering capability and although grainy in some sections, I thought was very well handled in your film.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 months ago
thanks Terry. a friend of mine has one (D300s) and thinks the video is the same as on the D90. will borrow it one of these days.

Very inspiring work. I'm currently saving money for getting a 7D.
What is your impression of image quality at 1:1 pixels on the 7D. I looked closely at 500D and 5D and I could never get them sharp at 1080. I compared with Canon H200 and it produced sharper pictures in some areas.
Do you have any 1:1 images on 100 ISO you show perhaps?
    /Andreas
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 month ago
not yet, but what i have seen its good. can't compare it to H200, different beast. for now i found its best to turn of sharpness in camera and sharpen in post if necessary.

    Hey Mike,

    Excellent work!

I'm considering to buy a 5D instead of 7D, because of its full frame and 30 megapixel pictures.

What do you think about it?
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 month ago
if photography is your priority, then maybe. depends on what kind of photos. sports, def 7D. portraits, 5D. video, 7D.
