Can I ask, was your zoom all the way to 17mm at 00:46? (I'm just wondering how wide of a lens you need on a 7d, to actually go wide...)
i prefer 5D !!!
definetely
Can you tell me something, where can I find this place at 2:30 min ?
It seems to be great for a Timelapse !
Thanks for sharing =)

I've been waiting for someone to do a video about the Hi-Line because I think it's such a cool thing. Although, I don't feel like I really saw the Hi-line in this piece. For non New Yorkers who do not know what it is, they need shots to get more of a feel of the Hi-line. Now this made been more of a test shot video, I don't know, it didn't say so in the description. I'd like to see shots from the ground looking up at the Hi-line, some movement under that hotel would be nice (but I understand if it's not in the budget), a little time lapse, various pans or statics at various points, shots of people waking and shots from the street of people looking up at this crazy new thing? I thought your piece was nice, these are just my humble suggestions.
Also, I hate to burst everyones bubble but that 7D is quiet a bit noisy compared to the 5DMK2.
These gardens above the city are magic. That also exists in Paris. A space out of time:)
The 7D is really impressive !!
Niceness.
I think the noise is a little too distracting for me at 6400 in colour. In B&W it holds up much better because it looks more like grain - less obviously electronic.
The closest thing I have to compare on the 5D is High Roller vimeo.com/6509796. Not 100% sure what the ISO was but the stills from the same time say 3200 @ f1.4 and the in-car stuff was with a 15 f2.8 so I think it would have been at least 3200 and possibly 6400. Even after having to be vigourously "de-oranged" the noise seems less apparent to my eyes.
Philip Bloom did an improvised test for us in Dublin when he had the prototype 7D. I can't remember the stats but what I do recall is that, after looking very much the same for the first few clips, as the room darkened, the image brightness on the 7D seemed to fall off that of the 5D.
Bear in mind that by this point it was properly dark - lest we lose our perspective about these remarkable cameras. I would be interested to see if this is apparent with production models though. Maybe it is time for your "Jello Rig" to go nocturnal ;-)
I took shots in similar lighting conditions 10 years ago on DV. They look fine as long as you like monochrome green and weird glowing eyes.
Does it matter? I like to watch your films full screen and unscaled. Watched like that it distracted me from the action. Watched from this page, especially if I had not made the fatal error of scanning the comments first, it would not have.
The worst case scenario though would definitely be you thinking "I won't shoot this because the noise will bug Andy". I would rather continue my NY education through your films on whichever of your large fleet of cameras you to chose to use ;)
DSLRs do have their downsides though. They are big and heavy and need a lot of glass to match the S11's zoom range. They are also trickier to get steady shots with. For casual use they are probably overkill. You also need more will-power than I possess if you are going to stop yourself from buying accessories for it that don't blow your budget. Persevere though and the results are stunning as Mike's films demonstrate.
Somewhere in between the 7D and S11 is the Lumix GH1. If you like the concept of having very good video and stills capability in a single device with the flexibility of interchangeable lenses but the easier operation of a camcorder then the GH1 makes a good case for itself.
I would find yourself a good, patient dealer and give them all a good try together. If you already own some fast CompactFlash and SD cards, take them along so you can take footage/stills back at home. The built in screens are not really capable of showing the differences properly. It will also let you check that you have compatible playback and editing devices as this can be a hidden cost of the wonderful world of HD.
Thanks for any more info, it is much appreciated.
What is your impression of image quality at 1:1 pixels on the 7D. I looked closely at 500D and 5D and I could never get them sharp at 1080. I compared with Canon H200 and it produced sharper pictures in some areas.
Do you have any 1:1 images on 100 ISO you show perhaps?

i have some nice still shots and paintings over the three + years living here and the sunsets are incredible, that hudson river school of painters started all of this around 1820, oh Maxfield Parish was around here once or twice for inspiration. just a little history
Excellent work!
I'm considering to buy a 5D instead of 7D, because of its full frame and 30 megapixel pictures.
What do you think about it?
