Construction: Designing Immersive Experiences- Part 1

Study the emerging Multi-Disciplinary Processof immersive design and the Creation of virtual and physical worlds. Using examples from art, architecture, education and film this panel will attempt to explore and analyze the design process and look at opportunities and challenges that lie ahead to create rich immersive environments for audience and user.

Kim Baumann Larsen, Founding Partner, Creative Director, Placebo Effects
Kim Baumann Larsen has worked on some of Norway’s largest architectural projects including the Oslo Gardermoen Airport, Telenor Fornebu and the new borough Bjorvika in Oslo. At Placebo Effects he provides digital design and visual effects services, and is actively involved in creating and speaking at conferences around the world investigating the future of design and visual effects. His work has been published in numerous architecture books, featured in exhibits, and he did visual effects for an Emmy-nominated TV documentary on Apollo 13. Kim is a founding advisory board member of the CGSociety.org and member of the 5D Founding Committee.


Ron Frankel, Previs Supervisor / Founder, Proof, Inc., proof-inc.com
Ron Frankel, President and Founder of Proof, is a pioneer in the development and integration of previsualization into the feature film production process. He was the first to introduce directors such as Steven Spielberg ("Minority Report"), David Fincher ("Fight Club"), and Darren Aronofsky ("The Fountain") to the use of previsualization as a combined technical and creative film-making tool. Frankel has a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a Masters of Architecture from MIT. He is the Co-Chair of the ASC/ADG/VES Previsualization Committee and is a founding member of 5D. His work has been published in Cinefex, American Cinematographer and The New York Times.


Ken Perlin, Professor of Computer Science, NYU Media Research Lab; Director, NYU Games for Learning Institute
Ken Perlin is Professor of Computer Science, Research Lab, and Director of the NYU Games for Learning Institute, where his areas of research interest include: graphics, animation, user interfaces, science education, multimedia. Perlin was the Founding Director of the Media Research Laboratory and directed the NYU Center for Advanced Technology. Among his awards are an Academy Award for Technical Achievement, 2008 ACM/SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, TrapCode Award, NYC Mayor's Science/Technology Award, Sokol Award, and an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award. He has been a featured artist at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from NYU and B.A. in Theoretical Mathematics from Harvard.


Andrew Shoben, Artist, Founder, Greyworld Limited, greyworld.org
Andrew Shoben is the Founder of greyworld, a world renowned artists' collective who create art in public spaces. His work finds expression through the mediums of installation, sculpture and multiples. His primary objective is to create public art that involves the human in an urban context. greyworld has created works in some hugely coveted locations across the world, and they now have permanent installations in twelve countries. In 2004 he launched The Source, a permanent installation for the London Stock Exchange that opens the markets every morning. It was unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is watched by millions everyday on television. Earlier this year Andrew launched Invisible, a large scale and multi-sited work in Burnley UK with the support of Channel Four's Big Art Project. The documentary to accompany the project was aired on Channel 4 in late autumn 2008. Andrew is Professor of Public Art and Computation at Goldsmiths University.


5D Conference
