A visualization of ship routes. I found a dataset which contained 40 years of data from ships. Ships made records of temperatures, CO2 values, depths, dates and salinity values between 1968 and 2007. These records are collected by a program called SOCAT (Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas). UNESCO (from world heritage) released this data in 2007 set to show how ships with measurement equipment should collect their data from now on. This data is examined by different research groups in all continents. The entire dataset (1.3 GB plain text) is available at 'socat.info'.

In the installation I made you can browse through this data. You can look for interesting routes, because I saw some really beautiful geometric shapes. I distilled those shapes from the entire dataset. You can select a route you like or a route that is connected to your birthday for example. If you selected one, you can send it to the old '90's pen plotter, which plots a card that you can take home.
