This is an example video of how some of my shots messed up in high light areas. The zoom is just to enlarge the affected area and not in the original shot.

Shot with the 7d and Nikon 80-200 at F2.8 in M mode, ISO 200 and HTP turned on because I was going to do a lot of night shooting.

Not sure what caused this, whatever it is I hope someone can tell me. Otherwise I will need to do a lot of testing to figure it out.

    Your shot looks over exposed...
Also, did you turn off all the auto settings?
  • Maarten Toner plus 5 months ago
M mode stands for Manual, no it is not overexposed.

Even though it was in Manual mode, did you turn off the Auto Light Optimization? This can be on even in M mode.

    Because this causes the artifacts?

I can't say for sure, but I know people are reporting problems in dark areas when this is turned on, so I have no idea if it would do the same in highlights.

But worth doing a test I reckon.

Except for HTP nothing auto was turned on, so who knows. Will update firmware first then try to duplicate this, I expect HTP has something to do with this.

    Htp?

    Highlight Tone Priority?

Canon feature to keep highlights from dying, but it has some problems with video. Here is a nice basic article:

Ok found this compression artifact nonsense happens in all shots with high lights, especially visible when shooting skies.

So I guess nobody had any experiences like this? Have not seen anything like it again, then again didn't shoot any high contrast stuff like this since.
