The character of Ludwig was more fleshed out in early drafts of the film. We cut out a sequence of events wherein he made reports of his encounters to hi superiors in The Brotherhood. Do we even mention the brotherhood in the final version of the film? I don't even remember.

It is becoming clear to me now as I look back on these cuts, that we basically cut all the funny stuff out in order to make the movie "work." I think the real key to making comedy is that your funny scenes have to ALSO be functional and necessary, or they will be left behind like these, and you'll be left with a walking skeleton of a film.
