Created a maya particle system to auto generate splashes. MEL expressions/Dreamworks velocity plugin calculate the strength and direction of the splashes. Particles were clustered for extra detail using DW's Pa_setup. Splashes were color corrected and composited over the background using Comp.

Falling Ash 0:200:33
After Earth, Tippett Studio
Tasks: Maya particle simulation, shading
Software: Maya, Nuke
Using Maya particles create the look of falling ash. The look and level of detail were controlled by Mu scripts which were edited on a shot by shot basis. Ash was approved via slap comps in Nuke, and then handed off to the compositor for final compositing.

Stylized Fire Arrows 0:341:00
Kung Fu Panda 2, Dreamworks
Tasks: Fire simulation, stylized motion blur, compositing
Software: Maya, Mf_render, Comp
Simulated fire with Maya fluids. Wrote a MEL script to automatically set up simulations for multiple arrows. Swapped out exaggerated motion blur fire for arrows in flight. Fluids rendered with a proprietary volume renderer called Mf_render. Art direction called for an exaggerated red flame and finalized in a proprietary compositor.

Simulated fire with Maya fluids. Fluids rendered in Mf_render. Exaggerated red flame tweaked in Comp.

Snow splash 1:061:08

Created a Houdini snow splash setup. Snow splashes was emitted procedurally based on the impact of the feet. The angle could be manipulated by the user.

Train Smoke/Afterburners 1:091:19
Rise of the Guardians, Dreamworks
Tasks: Create choochoo train smoke and transition to jet afterburners
Software: Houdini, Maya, Mf Render, Nuke
Used Maya fluids to create train smoke. Used Houdini particles to create afterburner effect with smoke rings and jet flames, then composited the fx layers in Nuke.

Pumpkin Vapor 1:191:31
Tasks: Develop look of pumpkin vapor, create a system for multiple shots with an interface for other artists, compositing
Software: Maya, Pa_render, Comp
Developed the look of vapor based on provided Artwork. Created a Maya particle system that can be ported to multiple shots. System was built with an interface for other artists to control vapor speed and direction. Final effect was composited using Comp.
