In May 2013, ten students and their professor from Western University (located in London, Ontario, Canada) embarked on an accredited community-service learning trip to Rwanda. The trip represents a major component of an experiential learning course titled “Rwanda: Culture, Society, and Reconstruction”. Developed and directed by Professor Henri Boyi, the course continually enriches the lives of its students and their community partners in Rwanda.
I am grateful to have not only worked with but also been welcomed into a community of individuals who exhibit an unyielding commitment to education, social justice, and youth empowerment. I can’t recall a more challenging or humbling chapter of my life than the month my peers and I spent in the land of a thousand hills, but I’m grateful for every hurdle that reminded me there is still so much I have to learn.
Here is a brief glimpse of the insights we gained, the work we endeavoured to accomplish, and the people who became not just our colleagues but most importantly our mentors, friends, and members of our family.
