    Really beautiful.

This is some inspiring reference footage for a beginner like me.

And I ask the same question as the first poster, I'd love to watch a movie with you as DOP.

hey man, nice video and color, I have a canon XH-A1, I was wondering, what do you use to get those colors.
  • Steven Dempsey 6 months ago
For the XLH1 stuff, I developed a preset called "Panalook" which is loosely based on the color gamut of the Panasonic DVX100.

For the XHA1 stuff, I created a preset called "VIVIDRGB" which gives much more saturated colors than any of the factory presets.

Both of these presets are available for download on DVInfo.net

    Steven, amazing work!

Do you record 4:2:2 through the HD-SDI?
  •
  • Steven Dempsey 6 months ago
thanks everyone. Radoslav, I just capture directly via tape so no HD-SDI hookup.

    Wow, amazing color!

From the cameras you've used, which one do you prefer?
  • Steven Dempsey 6 months ago
I really like my current A camera which is the Canon XHA1 but I've always been partial to the color gamut of the Panasonic cameras. I love the ability to shoot variable frame rates on the HVX200 but the resolution for landscape work is not as good as the Canon cameras. I'd love to own a Red but that's not affordable right now.
  • Radoslav Karapetkov 6 months ago
RED looks very promising, I guess we're all dreaming of it :).

I'm a huge fan of you work. I also live in Seattle and am a student at UW. I was wondering with your capturing do you use HDV 1440x1080 then convert to 1920x1080? I use Final Cut Studio 2 and have been debating whether to use HDV to edit then at the end convert to prores for CC or go to prores raster 1920 and edit from there (huge files). Was wondering what you use. Beautiful work.

I want to second Arzhang's question about doing HDV timelines vs. full 1080p timelines after upconverting HDV footage (Compressor?). Thoughts?
  •
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
I capture using Premiere Pro and Cineform AspectHD to create AVIs. I stick to the 1440x1080 timeline.

If I am selling stock footage, for instance, I will convert it to a full raster 1920x1080 because they require the full HD size.

Hi Steven another xlh1 user here :) Can I ask about your landscape shots and infinity focusing? I tried the infinity setting but it still looks a little out of focus can you help me?

    > hello@media73.co.uk (Andy from xlcinema forums)

Also can you let me know your settings for the dempsey and panalook settings i cant open the presets in excel. Which did you use for the above shots?

    Cheers for the inspiration Ste.!

I'd love to see a copy of this video where you've got titles over the corner of each shot saying what camera/adapters you used for each one.
