Building A House Unto The Lord - 1 Kings 8:1-18
Building a House for God had been a dream of David & Solomon. David was a shepherd & God made him king. He was a nobody & God made him somebody. As king, David sinned greatly but came to understand God’s forgiveness was even greater. He could have wrote the hymn ‘God’s grace is greater than all my sins.
Solomon was the 5th son of David, 2nd son of Bathsheba, an adulterous woman, a fact I’m sure his brothers constantly reminded him of. His claim to the throne was as far-fetched as David’s. Even David saw Absalom as the next king & General Joab & Abiathar the Priest liked his brother Adonijah. So when Nathan the prophet told him he was to be king, it humbled him.
And so the family of David, Bathsheba & Solomon determined to do something to thank God. They wanted to honor Him & allow others to do the same. They would build Him a house, a national sanctuary to be called by His name…The house of the Lord.
