Picked up my new Canon 7D the other day and went out in the afternoon with my wife Katie to take some quick test footage.

Quite happy with the camera so far. I do prefer the look and feel of the 5D footage slightly more than the 7D but the simplified post workflow is awesome and a trade-off I'm happy to make.

Shot in 25p with some simple 3-way colour correction in Final Cut. Lenses used: 70-200mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4

Music: Joshua Radin "Only You"

beautiful shots Matt, my 7D arrived yesterday a couple hours after I left for a week.... can't wait to get home and play :) which 70-200 are you using?
  • Matt E plus 2 months ago
Thanks Jeff. I'm using the 70-200mm 2.8 IS model. You've got lots to look forward to when you get home! :)

You call this a test? WOW! You make all my test videos feel like nothing.

This looks like a full production movie, the composition, the lighting and colors are perfect.

    Excellent Job.

Thanks Ked for your kind words.

    Great video.

Dumb question: why is the 7D post workflow easier?

    Thanks.
  • Matt E plus 2 months ago
Thanks Trevor! I'm in Australia so we're PAL over here. Because the 5DII only shoots in 30p that meant a very lengthy process to convert the footage to 25p. The 7D shoots in multiple frame rates (24p, 25p, 50p, 60p) so that means all I have to do is convert the footage to ProRes and I'm good to go. No other conversion needed. Hope that helps.

What setting do you normally use when shooting lets say, in a room with average light? Is it on P, Tv, Av or M?
What I am trying to figure out is how to blur the background as maximum keeping the subject on focus. What my 7d is doing is changing the light when I pull the zoom out. Thanks for any help.
i am using the kit lenses 18-135
  • Matt E plus 2 months ago
Hey Vladimir. I'd say the 'change in light' you're experiencing would be because the lens you're using has a variable aperture depending on its focal length - at 18mm it would be at f3.5 and at 135mm it would be at f5.6 - something like that anyway. To get the best out of a DSLR when shooting video you're better off using prime lenses (fixed focal length) or constant f-stop zoom lenses like the 70-200mm 2.8. Hope that helps.

    Very nice.
    Thanks for posting your test.

Matt, what, if any, issues have you faced so far with rolling shutter?
Is it easy to vary audio levels?
This looks like it could be a great hybrid camera to shoot travel docs and the like but audio is essential and haven't heard much about that side of things yet.
    Thanks.
    Jake.
  • Matt E plus 2 months ago
Hey Jake. I haven't done any audio tests with the 7D yet. I'd assume the results will be quite similar to the 5DII.

As for rolling shutter I've read reports that the 7D doesn't suffer as badly from it as the 5DII. In the filming I've done so far I haven't been able to tell any difference between the two. But, having said that, I try to avoid filming in ways that would result in rolling shutter anyway.

  • hay matt nice vid. did you ever try the 7d or 5d on the merlin?
  • Matt E plus 2 months ago
Haven't tried them out on the Merlin properly yet. I tried the other day but was missing some weights and was short on time. I hope to spend a bit more time getting it right at some stage. Here's a cool tutorial on the Merlin+5D if you want to check it out: infocusvideoevent.com/blog/2009/04/merlin-steadicam-and-the-5d-mark-ii.html

Hey Matt! Awesome Vid. Question, what computer setup do you have to edit with final cut and prores size files? I have a laptop and it can't do it. THanks
  • Matt E plus 2 months ago
Thanks Marc! I'm editing on Final Cut 7. I convert the 7D footage from its native format to ProRes422 using the free software MpegStreamClip. The laptop I'm using is a Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz Intel Core 2 Due with 4Gb of RAM. It works great with no issues. Hope that helps!

Hi Matt. Nice little test with some nice lens flare which I like a lot. Have you upgrade your FCP to 7 yet. The new Pro res LT gives awesome quality at less than half the file sizes. Ive tested some footage comparing each option and you cant tell the difference between that and the full HQ version.

    Mike
  • Matt E plus 1 month ago
Thanks Michael, great to know. I upgraded to FCP 7 recently but haven't had a chance to test out ProResLT. You've saved me the trouble, cheers! :)

Brilliant mate, i bought myself a 7D about 3 hours ago in full knowledge that the 5D will have 24/25p soon. Its about the man behind the camera, not the quality.. and you have prooved that here.

I think too many people are worried about the quality and forgetting to focus on production and creativity
  •
  • Matt E plus 1 month ago
Thanks Liam for your kind words. I agree with you. A lot of people are trying to get these cameras (5D/7D) to do all the work for them. But, there's so much more to creating compelling imagery than shallow DOF.

I'm glad I kept my 5DII. It and the 7D will work really well together once the 5DII gets the 24/25p firmware update early next year.

hi matt, great vid again! i was wondering if this was completely bare hand held, or with dslr rigs?
  • Matt E plus 1 month ago
Hey Janix. Thanks mate! I used the Cinevate DSLR rig for all the shots in this piece.

    Hey Matt,

(Comment for all your videos) Nice Colors and the way of filming. One of the thoughts I get when watch your videos: I wish that I have the Australia “film-location,” wish I have a steadycam and much more. I keep an eye on your videos, I can learn about it!

    Keep up the good work!

    Bye.

Hey Matt! Your Video is Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing. Canon owes you a little cash cause we went out and bought one after watching it.

I have a couple questions I hope you dont mind answering...

    1. Have you had any strobe on your frames when shooting outside? I've heard that if the shutter speed is too high that my be the problem, but I haven't figures out how to get around it. Ultimately I want to be abl to shoot outside with my 50mm 1.4 and get some great DOF without the strobes.

    2. Do you have any tricks for cool lens flares?

    Thanks!!
  • Robert G. Weddings plus 4 days ago
David...the way i'm dealing with this issue is i just picked up a "Fader ND" which is an ND filter you screw on the front of your lens that you can twist and increase or decrease the amount of ND you are needing for the correct exposure. This is where i purchased it lightcraftworkshop.com/site/EShop/EShop.aspx?EshopID=026a3168-fb77-4d38-aaf7-9f7c70df7b8b&CategoryID=28ffda49-dc05-40f5-a8e6-76ae4682b396 - it's in the mail on its way but I've read many great reviews on it. this way i can keep my shutter at 1/50 and run my lens at 2.8 and dial in the ND to the right exposure and still get amazing DOF! hope this helps.
  • Matt E plus 4 days ago
David, sorry for the slow reply.

I just bought a couple of Fader ND filters as well. They are great, I'm super happy with them.

Like Robert said, they enable you to shoot outside with your shutter at 1/50 to get that nice 'filmic' motion - and set your f-stop nice and low to get the gorgeous DOF you want. Then just dial the ND in to expose things correctly. A great solution!
