1. Spiral
A man boards the tube late at night.
It is empty except for a woman he finds strangely alluring. She looks just like him.
His face grows towards hers, and hers to his.
Not a word is uttered, this is their moment to lose themselves in each other.
But ultimately they are just passing ships in the night.

Directed by Ross Neil and Matt Clark, with thanks to HSI London.

    Hey Dude,
    You'r "freaking weird"

  • Darren Dyk 2 years ago
Let me first point out that the animation was impecable. Its definitely a creative twist and to that extent it was very well done. However, and don't get me wrong, it just wierded me out a bit too much. The worm thing was just overtly strange and I didn't really think it did justice to the song. I'd like to hear a bit about your reasoning though. Why the strangeness?
  • Andy Wynn 2 years ago
Ditto. I feel like there's a tendency in motion design to say the weirder the better, and that people are less likely to critique something like this, especially with the amazing animation and design. But it seemed like this really didn't fit the tone of the song. I guess you could say it added and even changed the meaning of the song rather than communicating along with it. More of an abstract story set to music, rather than a music video.
  • Darren Dyk 2 years ago
Exactly. Well put. Its a very good piece of work, no doubt. But the song is adding to the story and not visa versa. Haha, for a bit I thought I was the only one seeing it that way.
  • Matt Clark plus 2 years ago
It may sound surprising, but it really isn't that uncommon to pitch for a music promo without even hearing the track. That's often part of the process, taking an existing idea to the commisioners and seeing where you can go with it, as happened here. We did spend a lot of time crafting it for the song, getting the pacing right. Why is the vid so strange? Well, we like strange things... it's just an odd little love story, which people tend to find either quite moving or completely revolting, which is what we expected really. I can think of plenty of music videos which are completely unrelated to the song, sometimes the incongruity is very powerful.
Ultimately this was an unsuccesful pitch, the official video is also animated, and equally surreal if not more so.
  • Andy Wynn 2 years ago
Thank you very much for your response. I agree that the incongruity can be very powerful, even taking a song to new heights beyond what you ever thought when just hearing it. I relate my experience to loving a book and then not relating to the movie. I already had a bias as I had already placed emotional meaning into the song myself. Your story doesn't fit that meaning, so I was put off by it. At any rate you did a fantastic job, and I appreciate you taking the time to let us in on a part of the process.
  • To me it was great. It's a sweet story, which just happens in the imagination of two strangers. And when they separate again, you actually feel how cruel this is. Not so strange at all to me!

I wanted the woman to turn and go after the man. But the way it was fit in character and left me wanting more. Just great!

I'm not an animator, but I did an eerily similar video before I saw yours. But yours is amazing, and I don't find it strange at all.

    Is this stop-frame?

Camera moves, moves of the tube and the characters really slick and smooth... Almost too much.
Even smoother than Corpse Bride on which they spent a year and a half with a massive team and budget...

Can someone answer my question seriously, no guessing please? Thanks.
  •
  • Chris Ullens 2 years ago
    Sorry, me again...

I know there's loads of CG, but my question is, was there any stop-frame at all?

    Cheers for helping.
  • Matt Clark plus 2 years ago
No, there was no stop frame used, it's all CG.
  • Chris Ullens 2 years ago
Thanks very much for replying Matt.

To be honest, i do a lot of stop-frame and i think i would've changed life if you had told me it was partially stop-frame...
    Hehehe!

    Very beautiful film, congratulations.
The textures, the animation, the sets, the storyline, the facial expressions and the character design...
I enjoyed your film a lot!

I hope and wish you we will soon see more of your work around, but with that quality, i would imagine so.

    Bye

This is really amazing. The first time I watched it I had no sound on and I actually liked it more. I had never heard this song. I'm pretty sure they didn't use it for two reasons.

    1. Chris Martin appears nowhere in the video
    2. It doesn't fit the song well

But on its own its amazing.

everything looked sad and mundane until the face started extruding out and it brought forward a brilliant play of intermingling of the geometry. really liked the cut to 2d sequence of two trains running along like the DNA strand.. symbolizing the connection between the two characters.
