This is the FIRST of a series looking at Rhode Island’s economic development challenges and its struggling business climate. Sasse discusses a wide range of crucial factors and measures taken during the past legislative session to address ineffective economic development initiatives via the creation of a new Department of Commerce. However, Sasses cautions that we cannot solve problems by creating a larger bureaucracy. In fact, “the best practice is to move away from a government/bureaucratic dominated system to one that operates as a partnership within a network of collaborative stakeholders.” In addition, Sasses shares what he believes are the essential leadership qualities Rhode Island needs.
