Flew into Christchurch and rented a car. Spent the rest of the day driving down to Queenstown. Driving around was actually a lot of fun because everywhere is so beautiful, a lot of the shots in this video were just random stops along the way. After spending a night in Queenstown we drove to Milford Sound and did an overnight cruise by Real Journeys ... I highly recommend this, and it's not very expensive. After getting off the boat we drove to Te Anau, rented bikes for a while, did a Glow Worm tour, and then stayed the night there. Next day we went back to Queenstown for skydiving with N Zone ... they're a great company and that was a lot of fun. Next day we drove up the west coast and slept in Fox Glacier. We spent the next day in Fox Glacier and checked out the Glacier itself. Day after that we did the Copland Track, which is just south of Fox. It's about a 7 hour tramp to get to the Welcome Flat Hut, and there are hot pools right next to it. After we got back from tramping we drove up to Hokitika and spent the night. Then drove back to Christchurch the next day.
We stayed in either hostels or couchsurfed the entire trip ... which is a lot of fun because you can meet people there to hang out with. If I had more time I would have liked to make it up to Nelson and Wellington. The consensus seems to be if you only have time for one island, do the south. Because a lot of things get booked way in advance, you'll want to book some things [like skydiving and the cruise for us] but don't overplan, we had a lot of fun just driving around and exploring places along the way.
Hope that helps, let me know if you want to to know anything else!
