Imagery captured out of a backpack while walking the city of Brisbane. Really just a proof of concept that fine quality images can be captured simply and unobtrusively. The DII will certainly change the way I and others create images.

Great! At long last the picture quality i was accustomed from the Weinberger G3 Highspeed camera - which also recorded raw - altough "only" 1536x1024" at 1000fps - but with the difference of 60000 bucks...
    :-))

Wow! Glad to finally see something from the dII in the field. At a glance the latitude looks pretty nice, although none of these shots really push it. What are you finding about the camera in terms of dynamic range and can you post something that really puts it to the test?

    Thanks for posting this.

I'd say the bridge shot with the couple of guys pushes it...BG just holding in and surrounds getting towards black. The actual shot is a bit dark, I've since lifted it in the grade and there is plenty more there. Also at vimeo size the image is has extra apparent contrast.

Very nice indeed! I'm curious how the white balancing works (in post like the RED or in-camera settings), and also do you have any thoughts on what the ASA might be?

And look- it's Mark Lyon at the top. Hi Mark!
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
Daylight and tungsten, set exposure and record. The simplest layout and solution to aquistion I've seen. I've always thought red had gone overboard in complexity. This is the approach I'd like to see as someone who has shot alot of MP film. There must be colour correction information in metadata as when you see the pictures demosaiced they are neutral in colour and colourful as opposed to the viper type look in the viewfinder.

Looked great!. What primes did you use?
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
This has been shot with the supplied 9mm kinoptik (wide shots) and my 11-165 zoom with a c mount adapter from its arri bayonet mount.

    Very nice. very sharp.

Exellent! What are the lenses? Blacks a bit deep - what is noise situation?
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
Vimeo has mucked with the blacks... Very low in noise. I'll try to get some night stuff and stretch it (gain after the fact rather than in camera). I can't see much noise at all....nice CCD chip, also nice engineering which is what I suspect Ikonoskop has been doing with their time. Also very low battery draw in comparison with similar cameras.

Hi Nick, Thanks for sharing these. Love seeing Brizzy through 'your' Ikonoscope. Love the Bus Not-inService during peak hour ;-) A ? tho' the 1st couple of shots seemed to be at a faster frame rate, any info on different shots' settings would be greatly appreciated.
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
Not alot to say. All 25fps currently.

Remember this is the first couple of days out. Give me a bit of time and I'll see where we can get with more variety. I'm also dealing with very preliminary workflows and feedback to the lads at ikonoskop...oh and work!

Now the fun really begins. Please show and tell what it takes to "break" the image!

    Shake that thing around, man!

It's a CCD camera - no rolling shutter issues -

    For the love of GOD!!

Car mount shots today...stay tuned. They may take until next week to post. Trying to get cineform's DNG V1 converter to run. I am mac based so it means boot camp and pain...I hate windows. Mac version will arrive eventually but not now.

I've posted some pics built with a zoom in the ergonomy thread on the ikonoskop forum

This is great. Can't wait to see your other tests. I had a look at a couple of the dng files on the Ikonoskop website and had a play with them. There seems be so much room to move in post, amazing..... Thanks for the upload :)
  • MIchel 2 years ago
Yeah, I did the same to check the actual dynamic range, sweet!!

Images look great considering the size of the device. Seems to be some highlight smearing produced from the car head lights

Nick, there seems to be some chromatic aberrations (00:11 upper right hand corner) do you think this is a lens or camera fault?
  • Martin Lang plus 2 years ago
    I'm thinking the same thought...
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
It seems to be happening across both lenses but that doesn't rule out lenses. My initial thoughts are that it may have something to do with the OLPF. It could also be the angle light out of the rear of the lens is hitting the chip at the extremities.

    very nice nick.
I'm wondering when they will release it.
It can be e very cool camera.
    waiting for more footage!
  •
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
Expect release May next year. Footage may be later..too busy currently and away for a few weeks. I'll shoot some more and then the camera is Swedish bound at the end of the week. Loads of feedback and ideas which is what beta programs are all about.

It's early days on post..I've been using light room for post processing only because there isn't much out there. I am working with some post companies who are developing post solutions or extensions of their current product. All will have changed by the time the camera gets to market.

Thanks for posting. The images apart from the smearing look great to me. What ISO do you rate the camera Nick?
  • Nick Paton ACS plus 2 years ago
Rating is about 500ASA in daylight and tungsten.

I see there is a fair amount of chatter on news groups about processing errors in the post chain. I'd like to make it clear here that the footage is a fairly rough representation of what the images could be. I am not a post expert but am working with quite a number of post solution providers, big and small, so that they can optimize a post solution that maximizes the camera's output. Unlike RED, who have held their secret source close to their chest, post solution providers will have to work with the frames before an optimum solution is achieved. I'd give them some time.....

no disrespect to everyones efforts, but i see nothing here that a 900 dollar canon hv30 cannot do...
only the canon seems to do it in a more cinematic less error free way.

Nick, can we see some low light tests ? This toy looks very promising !!!!! I'd apreciate if u guys can post some real tests, in over and under exposure situations etc thanks Ovi

I'd hoped to have some up by now but am still waiting for a colourist to take a stab at the footage.
  • any news?
  •
  • Nick, have you managed to have a stab at doing any resolution tests? This camera looks like the solution to a lot of production types. I absolutely love the portability and the smooth, non-electronic look to the images.

My only potential gripe, which i hope can be proved wrong with tests, is that it will suffer from aliasing issues due to the bayer filtering. Unless they have done things in a different way, such as a striped sensor?

Bunkofurko, the IkonoSkop uses a CCD, not CMOS.

Looks great! But what is the workflow like?? If 80Gb gets you about 15 minutes, how do you manage that kind of data volume in post??
  •
  • Great!
