Thanks for that Philip, Have been meaning to have a proper go at this and was wondering about time between shots. This one is 7 seconds, what was the Dungeness one and your night sky wedding timelapse? and were the shutter speeds different for a starscape shoot as opposed to a daytime shoot?
    Thanks

    Avey

Interesting using Quicktime to assemble the frames. I don't think you could use that method if you were shooting your sequence in RAW. If your going to shoot timelapse I would suggest shooting in RAW because it looks way better and you don't get problems with banding.

You can always shoot in RAW and then convert the images to JPG after post-production.
  • 599 Productions 2 months ago
That's very true but I was looking at it more that it was telling people to shoot jpeg instead of RAW because of the ease of converting the frames into video files. There are times when I use large jpeg but only when the camera begins to choke on frames. Mainly driving timelapse for me because the exposures are around 1/2 a second.

i did not know you could use quicktime pro to create image sequences.

i was using the final cup pro timeline and one frame jpgs! thanks for this phil. i learned a lot.

i have not tried 5dmk2 time lapsing using raw images. that will be next!

When you choose your HD size you will probably want to set "preserve aspect ratio" to something so it doesn't stretch out your image. Not Crop but probably Letterbox. It depends on what you want.

    Very informative tutorial!
Although I think doing this 4 or 5K manipulation would just kill off my computer

Philip, I haven't got Quicktime Pro and I'm using Final Cut Express. Any suggestion on how I can do this with my limitations? Thanks!

  • Great piece, Philip. Practical application uses for FCP and other tools are much needed, notably as the tools themselves change. Well done. Cheers.

    Your dock is amazing!
  •
  • Ludwig Derumeaux 2 months ago
Indeed, what a dock you have there ! But I know there is a tutorial coming up : how to create a HD dock, i.e. a dock that is as wide as a High Definition window. That is why screens get bigger all the time. There are always people whose dock ends fall off the screen.

Seriously, thanks for sharing this !

Nice tutorial! 5K stopped my MacBook Pro dead in its tracks... so I batched resized the images before creating the Quiktime and all was good.

Thanks, I've been making timelapses with still images in Quicktime Pro using exactly the same method. I wondering about adding some movement in Final Cut. Your video has really helped me out.

Good stuff, Philip. I was wondering if you knew how to do this on Snow Leopard. As it stands, it comes pre-installed with the new Quicktime Player, which doesn't include the "open image sequence" function. Thoughts?

yes Quicktime 7 which is still on your computer.

Excellent work Philip. Your disclaimer of being on a MacBook Pro seems to be a recurring theme - is that just because you're doing these tutorials on the road, or because you are putting off getting a MacPro? Either way, this is extremely informative to anyone looking to do timelapses, so you're providing a great service.

every time i use curent size to export the movie, quicktime crash. If i use to export 1280x720 or 1920x1280 - it works
  • Daniel Dides 1 month ago
Maybe your computer isn't up to snuff for that sort of rendering? You have quicktime pro, correct? What are the specs on your computer?

Great tutorial, I have been using iStopMotion from Boinx the past few years, but this looks much more straightforward. I really like the high-res pans and zooms. Fantastic work! Thanks for sharing.
    Cheers.
