Although the 7d has more options in its variable frame rates, the sensor is still cropped. The 5D has a better sensor, Canon is just being mean by not releasing firmware to allow 24p & 60p. Because most skating is filmed at 60i or 30p, the 5D still holds strong.

7D video was great and the rolling shutter didn't seem to affect the image too much. Did you use some sort of grip or just handheld?

I really don't understand anyone selling a 5Dmk2 for a 7D. They are so similar it's un-true. What Canon give you in 1, they take in the other. Nobody could ever distinguish between the two, except in the 60p mode. Not really worth selling if you ask me.

Yeah Nigel I would hold onto your 5DMK2 and sell it for the 1D Mark IV that comes out in December.. it will have the frame rates of the 7D and is supposed to have a groundbreaking image quality at low-light, but the body is going to be close to $5000.

24p is coming to the 5dmk2 next year in a software update.

I wonder if it will have 60p?

Thanks Nigel.. It is the actual audio in 60p mode. Converted to 29.97fps in Cinema Tools.

Yeah, it's great stuff... I'm not sure it "kills" the 5D though. But the 60p would be nice...

I've heard reports of artifacting at 60p. Any idea on that?

looks tight rb. no rolling shutter issues? do you have some sort of grip kit?
  • RB Umali 2 months ago
    Thanks Josh..
I'm using Cavision Rod Support with a RedRock Micro Handle Attached for the fisheye shots. adorama.com/RRMH.html

And for the long lens shots I am using a Bogen Magic Arm and the Zacuto Z-Finder for stabilization.

I'm wondering the same thing, are you hand holding the camera or do you have a rig? Picture quality looks good, I wouldn't say any better than the 5D, but definitely less rolling shutter. Although with a 15mm fish I've got some good follow filming done with my 5D. The 60p is the really sick feature here, if anything blows the 5D away it's that. Good stuff man I hope to see more soon.

I like the look. Hows the white balance settings compared to a HVX?
  • RB Umali 2 months ago
The white balance settings are so much better than the HVX. You have the option to do it manually against a white card, but my favorite option with the 7D is to use the color temperature (K setting) which lets you accurately tweak the white balance/color temp with a numerical value.

Nice vid. Just got the 7d to compliment my EX1. Have not figured out what rig options I am going with but I have a magic arm and I am waiting for the new stock of z-finders to come in. How are you using the Magic arm in relation to your body for support.

Coming up from FL to shoot the NYC marathon next weekend. I usually skate and shoot the runners but NYC is a little tough for carrying the board, the bag, two cams, mini tripod plus other stuff around the subway all day

I got the idea to use the Magic Arm for support from this thread - cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=4606
