American Sign Language translation: Long time ago, on an island near Japan, the village people did not know what to do with the baby boy because the baby's mother died. They asked the elder for advice. The elder saw that the baby has no legs and no arms - look like a worm. Decided that the baby would not survive. She advised to put the baby in a boat and let the ocean take away the baby's life. The boat left onto the ocean but ended up arriving another island. A woman heard the baby cry and found the baby in the boat. She noticed that the baby did not have any legs. She decided to raise the baby as her son. While she took care of him, the baby grew legs and arms; however, he crippled when walk. He was Deaf. An interesting thing about the boy, he was a good swimmer and extremely skilled fishcatcher. Finally, the boy became a man. The foster mother knew that he would survive on his own and encourage him to travel. The man thanked her foster mother for her love and care. He traveled and fully explored the island. He knew there was another island and found himself a boat. He sailed and arrived another island. He decided to set up a shop selling fishes. The village people noticed and laughed when the new shopowner crippled. The new shopowner ignored them. He swam, caught and brought back to shop with a huge pile of fishes. His business was successful. The new shopowner proved the village people wrong. The elder recognized the new shopowner is the same person that the village abandon the baby to the ocean. He came back. The village and elder believed that he had magical power -- bring good health to children, make people laugh & smile and bless businesses with luck. Hence, named him one of 7 Lucky Gods. His name is Ebisu.
