There have been many discussions about whether the 7D with its cropped sensor can achieve shallow Depth of Field. In this short demonstration I pair the 7D with a 1970's SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 lens to show the capabilities of the 7D in this area.

    Its not even the glass really, it has more to do with the sensor size, distance from subject and how open you get that aperture. I have a cheap 50mm 1.8 on my 7D, and for the most part I struggle to not have shallow DOF indoors with natural lighting. Between the sensor size and the low light capabilities of this camera, DOF is a no-brainer compared to using my EX1 without a lens adapter. Not every shot in a normal video production should be with a shallow DOF. Yes, there can be too much of it IMO but achieving it so simply is wonderful.

    There's a realationship to the lens, aperture size, and focal length. There are great articles on the subject, but there's nothing like actual footage to make the point. I've been able to get good DOF on the kit 18-135mm lens also, just not as extreme as this example. Shooting this shallow is extremely difficult with moving subjects and makes you have to not only be good with your focus reflexes but also makes you have to decide if you want their nose, eyes, or ears in focus (choose one)!
