55. I've Made a Huge Mistake
So I found some more old footage from last summer. Sorry for the crappy footage and the lack of a tripod. I'll upload some new stuff soon, when I'm not so busy with important projects. Stay tuned for bigger and better things.

This footage is from when I graduated from college, packed all my crap up in a van and drove from Michigan to Tennessee to California. The trip lasted a week because of all the stops made, including a flat tire in the Grand Canyon...however I only have one miniDV tape to show for this entire trip.

All the good parts...are embedded in my memories.
And some are documented here: facebook.com/album.php?aid=2034418&l=2fac8&id=15300165

Any road trip involving a van, the grand canyon, and a flat tire sounds like a road trip worth filming.
  • the sad part is the flat tire bonanza was not caught on video. It was to upsetting/scary. Haha. There are so many hours now in retrospect that I wish I had filmed...but didn't for some reason. But at the same time, I am glad i got to enjoy a lot of the moments instead of being concerned about taking out the camera. I took a lot of photography too that I should post a link to.

A couple years ago when I was in the midwest I would always go on tour with friends's bands to sell merch and i have some of that documented on crappy footage as well haha. That is more entertaining that this footage haha.
  • mitch phillips 8 months ago
Yeah I guess sometimes video can't beat memories. Although if you did videotape a catastrophe such as a flat tire, im sure it would be a lot funnier for you looking back on it. I feel like there's something funny about flat tires, they always seem to happen when you're in a rush, or at in place you really just want to pass through. Did you get any footage of the Grand Canyon itself? I've never been there before, but it's on my long list.
  • oh yes my dear there is some footage of it here.

Very brief. But its there towards the end.

Check out the pictures in the album too.

ps. you'll always be asking yourself these questions throughout life. when you stop asking these questions, you're either really boring, or you're dead. or something like that.

    :-)
  • haha

    you're the best loonachic.

haha don't eat the worm he was struggling for dear life.

Its strange what effects leaving michigan can have on people. i lived in ann arbor for two years and have persistent pangs of nostalgia.
  • Yeah I have no idea what it is. I've lived in a slew of countries before, but leaving them wasn't as heart wrenching as leaving michigan..i don't know if its just because of my age and what point of my life I was at or the actual state. It's so bizarre.
  • Tommy Penner 8 months ago
I've lived in Michigan all my life and more-or-less can't wait to leave the state. I only have one "friend" (ex-g/f) who has truly left Michigan... I wonder if she feels the same way you guys do.
  • It's funny because I was reading through an old blog today. And when I graduated from high school in 2003 and moved to michigan i wrote "oh my god, I can't wait to go back to california, i miss it so much, i hate it here."

that lasted maybe a week. ahah

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE california, and i like it here...but i miss a lot of people in the midwest. And dare I say, snow.

    i miss snow?

but i can get that here too, it's only a 2 and a half hour drive.

    haha

    i miss the people more.

Being in college. friends, independence, money from working...etc

But I am possibly shooting a film there this summer so i may be back in MI before I know it.

I really liked the 30 secs + starting with 2:41. At first I thought you were apologizing for "creepy" footage. I guess I thought that because of the scary thumbnail. There have been times when I've gone on trips that I've debated about taking photos of everything. One time, I decided to just enjoy the trip and not document it all. While it would be nice to have physical documentation of what happened, I really enjoyed what I saw and am glad that I decided to just absorb it all instead. It's a fine line to tread. I've had questions about whether grad school was the right thing. I had to keep thinking back to when I started, that I felt that this was the direction I was supposed to go in. I've made it now and am glad I stuck with it. Good luck!
  • Haha when I loaded the video it was the generic rainbow thumbnail, then I refreshed it and this one appear and it really scared me. Haha. Yeah the best part of this trip was absorbing everything and spending quality time with my mom. She told me some ridiculous stories. it was a good time to open up.

Part of the problem I am finding with grad school is that I don't feel like it's challenging me enough...well no, not that, but I feel like I'm not learning as much as I should...especially for paying so much money. Most of the things I learn, i do it on my own..and I don't really need school for that.

Film school is pretty much a load of crap.

it's so chauncy and all about networking.

I'm in it because i want to get my degree so I can potentially teach.

But mostly...i want to shoot 35mm film, and I probably would never be able to afford that if i was in school even though if i took all the money i am spending on school< i could probably afford to rent a 35mm camera for a couple months to shoot a feature length film. haha.

    This was a nice video.

As for the questions, I agree with Loonachic, the day you stop asking yourself these questions is the day you stop having a purpose. To use a cliche, life is a journey. It would be pretty sad if you reached the destination already!

I have found that the older I get, the more I feel I don't know the answer to those questions myself. The truth is that we (or at least most of us) have many different lives (our social life, family life, work life, life surrounding our hobbies and ideals etc), and seemingly more so the older we get. So it's only natural when you have to be all these different people, to now and again stop and think, "Which one of these people am I?" or "Which of these paths do I actually want to do?". At the end of the day, if you have some people that make you happy, and you still find the time to do things you like, then you are very lucky. Some times it's a struggle, but all good things in life take hard work.

One important thing to remember is that wherever you are or whatever happens, you'll always have us here waiting for you at Vimeo :)
  • Buck you are really sweet. I really appreciate what you wrote, with the utmost sincerity. I think a lot of times it's not so much the "Who am I" as the "What am I doing?" I decided that I should pursue things that bring joy and happiness to my life, even though with that comes other problems like financial instability, etc... There are always going to be problems, thats why I tried to live somewhat impulsively and just do think I think will make me happy. The problem comes when you start second guessing those things, or even intent, which in many cases seems wrought or selfish.

Also they always say you should probably not worry or dwell on such things because you could be using that time doing things that are more meaningful and substantial. For some reason, I feel it to be healthy to have some sort of crisis every once in a while as to not allow it to build up into something fierce.

However, it is reassuring that I have made meaningful connections with people on here that are always helpful to me, such as yourself.

I really appreciate you Buck and I am thankful that I know you.

Loonachic is right - the fact that you feel this way does not mean you made a mistake. One way or another, we all have these feelings. Plus, Cali is the shit.
  • oh you guys such full of nuggets of wisdom.

    <3
  • Eric Anderson 7 months ago
It was the "Cali is the shit" line that did it, right?

    "Cat Anderson"

hey off topic.. do you know how to do this? tumblr.com/help/custom_domains

I am not web developer savvvy and i can't seem to figure this out.
  • Eric Anderson 7 months ago
Sure do... login to where you bought your domain name. Then find the section where you "point" your domain. Enter the IP address that Tumblr gives on that page - that will point your domain to tumblr. Then you turn on the option in your Dashboard and you're good. It can take 48 hours for your registrar to complete the change. Does that help?
  • Eric Anderson 7 months ago
Fire off a PM if you need more help.
  • oh poo i didnt even have to do that. All i had to do was set the forwarding address to my tumblr. psh im dumb.

today i bought karenabad.com its incentive to start my portfolio site.

    finally after so long

for now i link it to tumblr.

thanks for your help eric meow

I don't really agree that you should be asking yourselves these questions all your life.
There's that famous quote, that i am probably about to misquote.

'Find something that you love doing, then do all that you can to do it for a living, and you'll never have to work another day in your life'.

It's about committing to a goal/future/dream, then about putting the puzzle together on how to get to the destination of that funfilled, unpredictable journey.

    Never stop searching.

Those clouds are insane btw x
  • Thank you for this. All of these comments are very helpful and encouraging in their different ways. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave that comment. Thank you sincerely.

Nice, Ms. Abad! I've been hearing through the grapevine that prehistoric beasts have been spotted in my area. I'm currently investigating.
  • Dinosaur world is only in Kentucky (where I went) and FLORIDA!!!!

I'm probably the only person over 10 that has fun at those places. It's like a crazy amusement park for me. But pretty boring for everyone else. you go on this trail where there are hundreds of life sized dinosaurs
    its pretty unreal

but they don't move or anything so that sucks. Dinosaurs are beautiful

    hee hee

The question to your questions is, are you happier there, do you feel better when you are there (in CA)?

  • I think that it fluctuates because things have not been good lately, but I don't think that the location is a factor. I could easily be going through these things in Michigan. I think I miss the people in Michigan.
  •
  • Ben 4 months ago
Love the video. I also like the vignetting as it seems to really add character to this type of shot.

    What camera do you use?
  • For this I used both a DVX100A and a GS320

    :-) Thanks so much Ben.
  • Ben 4 months ago
yay for the GS320. I have one too! I love it.
  • for sure most of the stuff I have on here I made with it.

But the one video I have that I made entirely with the gs320 that i like the most is this one:

    vimeo.com/992218

    silly little camera <3
