documentary work in progress…
In life I believe gender fluidity & being gender dynamic supports a legacy of power, worshiping of mother earth and tool for modernity. How are the gender dynamic Òrìṣà Ọya & Moloran Ìyá Ọlọ́ya conduits for spirit and a legacy for womyn’s power? Who are the people (genderfierce people) to continue this rich legacy of ritual, power and culture?
I wanted to tell a tale not often heard about womyn and Indigenous Yorùbá Spirituality.
Ọya: Something Happened on the Way to West Africa!
An extraordinary exploration of womyn’s leadership and gender fluidity within indigenous Yorùbá spirituality, along with the hidden truth behind power in Nigeria. This personal and political story investigates mythology, ritual, and power within indigenous Yorùbá spirituality. This story illuminates how the practice is of cultural relevance to modernity. The issue of womyn roles or gender dynamic in Yoruba culture & Yoruba spirituality is one of simultaneous truths. It lies in a place of the spirit world and human happening concurrently.
This investigation will occur through study of Òrìṣà Ọya, Chief Moloran Ìyá Ọlọ́ya, Yorùbá mythology, poetry, performance and interviews with experts.
visual language/treatment of film.
Poetic meditation of womyn and power constructs in Yoruba spirituality. this documentary is non-linear in nature. it is utilizing ritual and performance against text/audio. there is a layering of images and audio, which resonates with the multiple truths/levels of the practice/culture.
