117. 36 hour timelapse on the Canon 7D

A test to see how I could do timelapse for drastically changing light over a long period of time, filmed from my hotel window in The Clift in San Francisco.

I too one photo every 20 seconds remotely with the intervelometer and it was auto iris, auto shutter and auto iso. Would it would or would it be too jumpy?

I think it works just fine, but in future I would have done just auto shutter as would have done the job for me the same and been cleaner at night.

Music is Ghosts by Nine Inch Nails.

Shot using the Canon 7D, a Sigma 10mm fish eye and the Canon power supply for the 5dmkII/7D

When can we expect a 1d mark 4 review?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
Send me one and I will review it! :)

I'm not a service! Should be more like "will you be able to do a review of the 1DmkIV?" "Please, pretty please!" I don't actually get paid to do reviews unfortunately!

Loved at the one point you could see the shadow of a building crawling up, and looked almost menacing with the music.

Is the intervalometer you used only Canon compatable? I've been looking for something for my Nikon, without it having to be tethered to my laptop.

    Great stuff Philip!
  • Ricardo Guerreiro 2 years ago
What Nikon are you using? To my knowledge, the high end models (starting at D200 I guess) all have a built-in intervalometer. No need for the external one like for us "canon folks" (=

I will make one with my GH1.

I like how you got the weather to be sunny and cloudy and then rainy. That's good design :P

Actually, was this outside on your balcony, because it looks like the lens got a drop of rain on it during the shoot? Or was the camera behind a glass door?

fake? WTF? that was deadly Phil! The change into night and then back again was really cool, loved the glow in the background throughout the night. Must attempt one of these once my 40D comes back from camera hospital and i'll keep doing the lotto so I can afford a shiny new 7D or 5D MK II or 1D MK IV or heck all 4 if I win the lotto :D

p.s. Rudra Banerji is right, great directing you did with the weather :)

I did my first day to night sequence a few days ago I kept everything on auto except the ISO. I think I may have bungled the conversion to video in After Effects as it seems to have picked up some flicker.

Nice work as usual Mr Bloom.

Cheers from Canada.. That was cool.. Love the fisheye.. that's some serious warping. I too was surprised about the clouds at night... very cool.. I've been considering getting the Canon remote with interval timing on it, and now I just might have to make that happen.

Only thing I might suggest for next time, is could you make more blue sky? I mean weatherwise, I am sure that by now you must have assumed powers to control the weather...no? I really love blue sky and I figure that if Guilliano expects a 1D Mark IV review, then I can expect more blue sky... haha.. seriously though... very cool.

I did another time lapse and set it to full auto and noticed the ASA didn't go above 3200 even though I enabled the ultra high the ISO setting. I guess there are limits even for auto mode. For some reason this time in P mode the cam didn't adjust for exposure for more than 1/2 a second even though it should have.

Really awesome. Wouldn't you consider it bad for the camera to using the shutter like that? Wouldn't using a cheap rebel or a old 5d be better than using one of the newer cams?

Hi Philip, If you're going to make a timelapse sequence with fast skateboarding. What is the best shutter speed to use? And how many seconds is best for the remote? Using a Nikon D80 and will take photos indoors with good lighting.

Still have a technical question. Did you plug the camera to an outlet or used batteries? If you used batteries, you certainly had to change them manualy, right? I use my 20D for timelapse and is kind of boring to have to change the batteries, not to mention that if I have to leave the camera overnight, the battery doesn't last and if I'm not in a place where I can spend the night near the camera.... Thinking about getting one of those power outlet adapters for the camera. Any advice?

What quality setting did you ? and compact card size for that amount of pictureS?
  •
  • Edward Caldwell 1 year ago
You must have shot small jpg to a 16 or 32 gig card? 3 frames a min x 60 x 36 = 6480 frames. Wow you could hit the rated life of the shutter pretty quick doing long time lapse like this one.
