*UPDATE* I had time to tinker with the software and was able to lower its sensitivity level - now the gimbal will remain functioning after sudden jerky movements.
The Tarot T-2D Brushless gimbal stabiliser is designed for RC helicopters. It's fairly new, and can be bought as a full kit including the all-important control board. Assembly and a battery is required but the firmware is ready to use.
Here I just added a 15mm rod on top of the T-2D using Sugru, then using whatever rig configuration that's suitable. I find the two handle system is best. I velcro'ed the battery onto one of the handles.
It's only 2-axis so doesn't account for panning. The gimbal also spazzes out when shook too abruptly, forcing you to balance the gimbal again to reset - but that's done simply by placing your hand underneath it.
The tough thing when starting up the gyro is that you need to hold it level and static, enough for a few seconds, so the gyro can set itself.
Total cost was about HK$1,200
What I would use it for: Walking, drive-by, jib movement
What I won't: Water sports, running, impact sports
