This is a camera test.
I shot this vintage (Super 8 film look) video using my new Digital Harinezumi toy video camera bought on-line at urban outfitters for $170. Using a prototype Zacuto Zgrip Point and Shoot (stabilizing handgrip), I shot all of the footage here. All of the scenes of me I shot holding the Zgrip, pointing the camera at myself. No post process was done to this video, just captured and edited. Shot on October 21, 2009 at the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco while attending the RE:FRAME Collective.

  • I love the harinezumi! That intro is silly.

oh, now you are slagging my video ;-) I was going for a little silly/cheezy, apparently I got there. I'm kind of a sappy guy. Remember, I'm a lover not a fighter ;-)
  • Could've had more cheeze in it I think. The music selection was good.

So much cheese you should get a like from Wallace and Gromit. A lot of fun and it does a pretty good impression of Super 8.

  • Stevo, so let me get this straight -- this is an in-camera effect that you don't need to do in post? The Harinezumi shoots like this automatically? Wow...I like what I'm seeing...
  • Steve Weiss plus 2 months ago
Yes Adam, the Harinezumi shoots like this automatically.
  • Steve, I wanted your professional opinion | if the Super 8 style footage were combined with 21st-century audio mp3 quality, do you think this would mar the Super 8-ness of it? As in, Super 8 means raw, grainy, and a somewhat unfinished quality, whereas today's standards are about pristine finish? ::: I ask, because I'm thinking about shooting things this way. :::

I think it could go either way. The song I used Elvis Presley's "Memories" is from that era but the recording quality was very good. You'd have to experiment and find which works best for you. Video's are all about feel. The funny thing is, I wanted to use my favorite song from the 60's "Are you coming to San Francisco" which would have been more appropriate but didn't just work as well as Memories.

Either the cam is reeeally bad or really good :)
Anyway, the vintage style is sweet. Like the warm atmosphere...

I'm constantly in trouble for telling people their work, needs work. I'm not afraid to tell people, I didn't like it.

I watched a lot of your work and I liked it. What I like is that it is your own style, it's not Joes or Olegs or Jason's or certainly not Kevin's. I see a lot of copying in the wedding arena. I like your documenting the behind the scenes shoot, I though it had a feminine touch, whereas Joe, Patrick & Kevin's work is definitely done by a man (it's more forceful in my view and that's cool too) Kristen's work and yours to me has more of a feminine touch and I like that as well (more from a brides POV). I think the most important thing you can do is develop a style and stick with it (perfecting it with each project). Keep sending me stuff and I'll give you my opinion. Steve

You bought one! I like this look. I bet you got some funny comments from the people with some very expensive equipment.
I wonder how the camera's footage would work as fake super 8 in the context of a contempary shoot.

Love the look of this little thing. close to the same quality we get on a digital transfer from 8mm to digital. you can see the video limitations when you are doing fast pan or tilt movements. thanks philip
