Really beautiful. Are you using any sort of 35mm adaptor, or is this straight up XHA1?
  •
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
This is straight XHA1...no appendage :)

incredible light, that must be a fantastic place!
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 4 months ago
The light is always spectacular at the beginning and end of each day. But most people go to places at noon, when the sun is high, and everything comes out bleached. A good cinematographer, like Steven here, puts the alarm clock at 5 AM. :)

Wow! No words to explain my shock. THIS IS AMAZING. In fact - I'm excited more about wonder of creation than filming. However, HD footage, your XHA1 and Letus are realy amazing. Great great! Keep up your work!

Thank you all. I have done other stuff with narrative but these are things I've done mostly to keep my chops up.

Eugenia is right. You have to know when the best time is to shoot footage like this. I was a photojounalist for seven years and won awards because I knew when, what, and where to shoot.

This is fantastic footage. Your work is consistent and beautiful to say the least. Are you ever going to add "Something Fishy"?
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
Okay, okay, I am uploading Something Fishy just for you. I have now officially blown my weekly upload allowance. :)
  • Paul Davis 4 months ago
Ah man, you didn't have to do that. But I'm glad you did; My son loves that movie!

At the risk of sounding arrogant, while getting up early in the morning definitely helps, what's most important is having a technical knowledge of how to capture what you are seeing. It has taken me years of immersing myself in the technical side of things to capture these kinds of images. I can pretty much guarantee you that anything set to auto is not going to produce what you expect. Of course if you are comfortable with manual settings, then great. Most of all, learn the limitations of your tools and work within them.

My overall advice is learn to see and then learn your craft. The combination will produce thrilling results.

Thank you Steven for this words. I understand auto is ONLY auto :) Know how to set up shutter speed, framerate and aperture value is the key. However, open mind and creative thinking is (i think) most important. By this VALUE we can see fantastic films done by amateurs...

    I agree...

I took me five of my seven years as a videojournalist to understand this. And it's quite true. I'm sad I ever put aside my craft.

I will say that watching your films has given me motivation to return! Good stuff

The footage is certainly beautiful, but you've got some really sharp sound, too. At first I thought you were using stock sound, but after the dog started barking, I knew you were syncing in. Great stuff all around.
