Historians say that the Kaffirs of Sri Lanka started arriving from the eastern shores of Africa in the 1500s with the Portuguese, and later in more waves with the different colonizers of Sri Lanka.

'Kaffir culture' is a video portrait of one such community of Kaffirs and the struggle to keep their culture alive in the face of falling numbers.

Written and produced by Kannan Arunasalam.

Music by Ceylon Kaffir Manja, arranged by Jesse Hardman.

Special thanks to Sweta Velpillay (on sound), Nethra Samarawickrema (for help with translations), Leah Worthington (background research) and Greg Kelly (Radio Netherlands).

Kannan are people still using the term "Kaffir". It is a racially offensive term. It means uncivilized or heathen. It is roots in Arabic and was adapted "unknowingly" by the Portugeuese to describe southern Africans. Please tell me why they use this term on themselves??

Yes, she is correct, you can get arrested in South Africa for saying that ... Kaffir is an insulting and contemptuous term for a black African. But according to online resources The Sri Lankan Kaffirs are an ethnic group in Sri Lanka who are partially descended from 16th century Portuguese traders and the African slaves who were brought by them. Interesting ...

    Hey Didi... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaffir_%28racial_term%29

It appears the arabic meaning is different to the portugese understanding / use of the word... that also differs to the more modern useage as a racial slur.

I doubt they would use it as a racial term towards themselves, and may have a meaning in their own language... which may now not be understood if people can't remember it!

Great vid Kannan. I'm actually quite ashamed to say it, but I really was unaware that a minority group like this even existed in SL. +1 to knowledge I guess. Cheers!

Nice wrk Kannan... Proud to see some one atlast doing some thing nice to encourage them when Critisism Negligence was surrounding my Kaffir relatives in sri lanka.....

as per Didi.. even i know that the term is not very appopriate but these ppl don't know it, They live a very reserved life and do not know the happenings of the world yet.. I hope the situation change and they get more exposure like all of us do... for now I use "Black Sri lankans"?!?! i don't know how correct that is though.

thanks again for the good wrk
