Suriname is part of the Guiana Shield, a tropical wilderness spanning six countries in South America, which contains about 25% of the world's remaining intact forest and produces as much as 10--15% of the world's fresh water. With more than 90% of its land covered by pristine forest, Suriname presents exciting opportunities for green development. The country's wealth of fresh water could be a huge economic benefit into the future. For that to happen, we need to protect the forests and watersheds that make the fresh water. Conservation International has been working with governments and local communities in the region to ensure this happens.
