In July this year I worked in conjunction with the charity Tanzed to deliver The “My World My Story” Project. This project enabled participants to use photography to record their personal experiences with simple digital cameras. The project was run with the participation of 100 children from several rural villages in Tanzania.
The My World My Story project empowered its participants by encouraging young people who previously had little or no voice in their community to share their stories and identities with their neighbors locally and internationally. The project helped individuals visualise and express the different aspects of their daily lives through photography by capturing images of personal, family, neighborhood and heritage. These workshops culminated in an exhibition where the whole community was invited.
My World My Story left the skills to enable the participants to record their culture and everyday life for future generations and raise interest in and awareness of photography in general. In these challenging times it is imperative that we express our common human experience to ensure that we promote empathy and understanding of these culturally distant communities.
