Our friend producer and director Jay Dreamcollector asked me to come and film a really really simple setup of his friend Zhao Lin's piano recital a few weeks ago. Seemed simple enough, so I said yes and set up two cameras on sticks. The result isn't the most innovative piece of filmmaking, but it does what it's supposed to do and keeps the spotlight on Zhao Lin. In an idea world, there'd be a camera on her face as she plays and an extreme close-up of here hands, but all we had available were two SLR bodies and our longest focal length was 70, so no luck. In any case, Zhao Lin's Océan Étude is a 40-minute journey through the works of Debussy, Chopin, Prokofiev, Brahms, Kosma, with a quick detour to Hong Kong with Karen Mok. Sit back and enjoy.
