Lovely, Phil. You're almost creating your own little genre with these. Keep it up.
  • Philip Bloom plus 25 days ago
thanks tom. Keeps me away from the night timelapses too! ;-)
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 24 days ago
The other day I was talking to a producer and I was like, "And then we could add some Philip-Bloom-style shots around the city..." and he was like, "Yeah!" ;)

Didn't even need to explain any further.
  • Matt White 24 days ago
Ha ha ha I have heard that/said that myself.

Well, Tom. Philip's personal style is worldwide famous now, but... you don't even need a last name. Only three letters. T-O-M.

Someone says it and we all smile like "Yes, Tom. That guy... ...oh, yeeeah"

BTW I think I spotted Conner in there... ;)
  • Philip Bloom plus 26 days ago
Yeah, didn't realise it was him. He had a sign up saying "Will do anything for a dollar". Kidding Jon! ;-)

No cameo from me,just from Jon.
  • You don't have to say kidding... It was me holding the sign that said that!

I live in Kensington London but used to live in San Francisco for 6 years in the 80's. You have captured the mood and the sheer desperation of the poor there, it is very touching. Your best in the series so far I think.

I'd love to do something like this in my own city. Question: when you shoot something like this just for fun, do you have to get everyone to sign a release form? :)
  • Philip Bloom plus 26 days ago
Nope. I just ask them. For the wides. I am not focusing on any one character.
  •
  • Dale Kamp plus 26 days ago
I love watching these. Thanks Philip. Looks great.

As a note, Philip you have turned your "People" series into a genre. I've run into quite a few tributes in other filmmaker's respective hometowns and cities here on Vimeo.

Maybe I'll make one for Las Vegas (although you do have a short for Vegas I believe).

The shot from the tram makes the whole film. Reminds me a bit of your shot from the cable car. Really nice.
  • Philip Bloom plus 26 days ago
    Cheers Joe!

  • Zack Luye plus 26 days ago
Nice work. The trolley shot was incredible. I had to use a monopod when shooting Columbia's People -- you are a much better man than I for your balance skills.

How long does it take to conform your footage to 24p, for say 30 minutes of 1080p footage? Do you then have to transcode to ProRes after, or can you take care of the 24p and ProRes conversion all at the same time?
  • Philip Bloom plus 26 days ago
I conformed not converted. Cinema tools does it in seconds. I changes the header to 24p so plays longer. You can conform the h264 but i dont recommend it as you then lose the original speed rushes. There is a tutorial on my site about conforming.

will there come up a report of how u did it? Would be really interesting, what asa u shot with and how the amount of given light was to make a conclusion to the 1dmk4.
stunning images by the way. really impressed. watched 5 times until now..
  • Philip Bloom plus 25 days ago
My blog gives info. ASA was 1600 to 3200 (for two shots like the end guy)

Looking forward to trying 1dmkIV at some point.

Very interesting, it brings a special mood.
By the way, what event was happening at 2.57? I see a camera person with a camcorder and a DSLR - is that a wedding? I couldn't imagine that "the orchestra-man" (as we call those videographers who do the photographer too, in Romania) exists in the States too. Still, I may be wrong about that person.
  • Philip Bloom plus 25 days ago
a wedding I think. i just walked past posh hotel. Yeah ridiculous guy was doing two at once!
  •
  • Emrys Roberts plus 25 days ago
That was awesome Phil. Loved the Gate timelapse as well. San Francisco is definitely one of my favorite cities in the world. :)

Very Nice Philip. This is my favorite of the people series so far. That 5d image just looks so amazing. My 7d is almost there but just short on IQ
  •
  • Even with the number of homeless people in SF, it's clearly one of the greatest cities in the U.S. It's Manhattan West! Your lens captures the reality. Your choice of music helps create a very San Francisco mood. Fantastic.

I know this may sound cheesy but if I were to do something like this in my hood - Lagos, Nigeria, won't I need lights? Our streets are not exactly lit up.

  • Make Some Tea plus 25 days ago
I admire how you manage to approach people so up close although I discovered this myself when shooting couple of live events. It's really easy to deceive ppl with a DSLR in your hands. They act completely different to when you use a camcorder. 5d2/7d really have charms like no other devices. Good work, Philip.

Very well done! I assume this was all handheld (or mostly)? you've now motivated me to capture my city (Atlanta or ATL as it is famously known by)! There are a lot of things to go get down here in the Dirty South!

    Any advice? :)

  • nicely shot, smooth and tender towards people and the city which it rarely happens. I didn´t like some cuts how they were put together without waiting for the movement to come or go. However, this is my first film i watch of you and, is a good piece of filming. Well done!
