33. Lowa East Side People: Canon 5D mark II
2 years ago
Inspired by Vimeo's Weekend Project: Black Transitions, I always wanted to shoot a video that looks like "breathing" photographs and use transitions that look like closing and opening aperture blades on a large format camera. hope you guys enjoy it:)

Love how you captured the textures of the skin.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
    thanks Trin :O)

Great job Mike. Did you shoot this in a studio or on the street? The tonal quality seems like it's from natural light. Would you care to divulge a little info about the lighting and your b&w processing?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
yup, on the street. gaffa taped white canvas on a wall and asked them to pose in front of it. then heighten contrast and change the tint in fcp.

excellent portraits. would be cool to composite them all onto one grid...all breathing and smiling independently...there is always a sense of wonder in your simplicity....
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Albert. yup on a big screen, would look too small here

You tagged 7D too, did you shoot with that as well?? Great lighting mike... the detail on their skin was amazing... lens?? fstop??
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
    75-150mm and 100mm, only 5D2, had 7D in bag

I like it. One of the shots was too brief (I'm sure you have your reasons). Your composition is second to none and you seem to elicit really natural, interesting expressions from the people you photograph.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Andrew, yeah I know, two are actually too short, what can you do...

  • Jarbas Agnelli plus 2 years ago
    Excellent! You did it again.

The guy at 00:30 is in reverse, isn't him? Nice touch. It goes nice with the accordion.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Jarbas, nope, just slowed to 24fps
  • Jarbas Agnelli plus 2 years ago
Really? I was sure that he blinked in reverse!
  • Nathan 1 year ago
Me too, I thought it is in reverse... I love the film, but I would prefer it in 100% speed ;-)
  •
  • Love Story Media plus 2 years ago
Can't figure it out, have you changed speed on some/most of the shots? Motion (e.g. eyeblinks) seems to have blended frames...
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
    yup, slowed to 24fps
  • Love Story Media plus 2 years ago
So you didn't just conform from 30p to 24p so you had 1-to-1 frames? Same slomo without frame blending. Or did you keep it at 100% speed but just interpolated to get 24p?

Very engaging Mike. Were you using reflectors?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Andrew. na, started to use one, but it looked too fake, just picked a good spot for the light and moved during the course of the afternoon with the light

  • Wonderful, Mike. I used the same technique (breathing photos) as an epilogue in my last documentary and it worked pretty good (but I first saw it in "Motorcycle Diaries")
    Congratulations for the video.
