Amazing, especially motion controlled ones. This is truely a professional work.

It's not moco; they are just "virtual pans." I'm hoping to have a simple moco system in the next 2 months or so.
  • Jason Chen 2 years ago
Then I can't wait to see what you can do with a real moco head.

My head was subconsciously looking for a pivot point. I loved how for 2 secs you've successfully twirled me around the North Star 1:20. It wasn't as strong on the 1:17th being off centre.

You're a Jedi Master! Breathtaking work!!
    Thanks for sharing.

One of the best timelapses Ive seen on here. I want to try this with my wifes XTi or my 40D but I'm scared I would get addicted to them and blow out my shutter.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Lucasberg, these shutters can take a lot of abuse. A guy I know has run his Rebel XT for like 250,000 exposures already with no trouble!
  • Lucasberg (Joey) plus 2 years ago
    Tom ,
This video pushed me over the edge to get a TC-80N3 so I can use my XTI and 40D. I cant wait to get going.

  • Am i watching Baraka ?

    haha

    this is really great Tom
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 2 years ago
Haha, thanks. Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka are in fact the films that inspired me to get into timelapse! Especially the last 4 minutes of Baraka.

    *bows down to Ron Fricke*
  • Dude I know!

    I watch it a lot ....

    i really do...

I was editing 16mm on a flatbed a couple days ago and i saw a ton of 70mm and it made me think of baraka

    and my heart exploded.

i want to quit life and work for planet earth

    discovery channel or national geographic

    :-)

    great vid

  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 2 years ago
thanks. yeah a fellow over at reduser is putting together a major baraka- or planet-earth style documentary and i have been begging him to bring me along. :)

    absoulutly amazing
    perfect amazing and smooth panning...
what movie editor do you use?
  •
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 2 years ago
The "pans" are done in Adobe After Effects or Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro CS3 is amazing; it can do some motion and time remapping that I used to do only in AE.

what software have you used to create the frequency of frames??
  •
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 2 years ago
I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, but any non-linear editing system like Sony Vegas, Final Cut, etc, will work. You just make a 24 frames per second project (or 25 or 30), and when you drop the images onto the timeline they are automatically spaced out correctly. You can then speed them, slow them down, or reverse them.

Can you give us an idea of how you do those virtual pans in after effects? Are you using a specific effect? or technique?

    thanks.

  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 2 years ago
timelapseforum, are you aware we have a timelapse forum going?

    timescapes.org/phpBB3/index.php

    You're welcome any time.

As far as the virtual pans, all you have to do is set position keyrames, one at the beginning, and one at the end, then move the frame across the comp. Very easy once you figure it out. Actually, Premiere Pro can do the same thing, too.

    Hope that helps.

    awesome!
may sound silly but how do u focus your shots for distant landscapes or night skies when its dark? i'm trying the time lapse thing lately but i find i have to take trial and error shots to get it. is that the way its done or am i missing something?
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 1 year ago
Just learn where infinity is on your various lenses. The wider the lens, the better for night focus, because you will have more DOF - ie, more of the scene will remain in focus. If you are trying to get focus on a close object, like a tree or rock, find focus before the sun goes down and lock the lens at Manual. Or, you can buy one of those 2-million-candle-power floodlights and use that to focus in the dark. Again, the wider the lens, the better.
  • onefortynine 1 year ago

You may have already done it, but the meteor showers, I think in August, would make a great TL film.

That would be the Perseids, about August 12th. Good idea George!
