Made in 2006.

This was my second project with my fancy-dancy VHS camcorder! My dad informed me that he'd be up my way the next week with his girlfriend, so I put together a script and wanted to do some "special effects" with a blue sheet...

The shoot went strangely, in that I cued them to start, and since of course they didn't know any lines, they just launched into an extemporaneous rendition... I wanted to yell "cut" and start over, but by God they looked so good and so natural, I couldn't bring myself to do it! So I filmed them for a good ten minutes or so until they ran out of steam naturally, then we did the rest of the scenes, and there just wasn't enough battery to reshoot anything...

Additionally, I knew that my glasses were knocking against the camera body throughout their conversation, so the audio would be worthless. So I brought them home and quickly recorded their dialogue, again extemporaneous!

I felt like I'd failed, but then I realized that the failure to follow my plan had actually freed me to experiment! So I edited the video footage to the audio track, syncing them together based on gestures and emotions instead of lip movements or "reality," and I think the results were quite beautiful...

My original script was really kind of snarky and unexceptional. My dad and his girlfriend elevated the material and made something extraordinary and touching out of it, for which I am very grateful!
