In the usual case, a volcano collapses after it erupts since the stucture of a volcano is held up by the pressure of the magma in the magma chamber. When the magma chamber is empty there is usually no more support for the volcano, which means it collapses and becomes a crater.
Thrihnukagigur, which will remain in your mind as a series of jumbled, unpronouncable letters, is the icelandic name of the volcano. Roughly translated it means "three peaks crater".
Here's a quick video I put together of the descent into the volcano. The music is by Andy Stott. The track name is Submission, from his albulm We Stay Together.
Hope you enjoy the video.
