I was in Trona, CA, just a short ways from Death Valley, over the weekend shooting a mini-documentary. While there I spent some time in the town taking a few shots of some of the different sights. The town has 1800 people and is set up against a rocky, dusty hillside. There is no grass to be found.

The children don't act like they are missing out on anything, as they turn a hot, dry side road into their playground.

Shot on Lumix GH1 720p. Stock lens. Edited and graded in Sony Vegas Pro 8.

some great work ..so did you sot at 1/120? also love the grading, any tips or hints on what you done in vegas ,thanks..

Thanks Sammy! I mostly shot at 1/120, but sometimes higher...because I still haven't gotten some ND's so I am now thoroughly convinced they are necessary.
As far as Vegas goes, the only thing I did differently with this footage than the previous footage I posted was to keep resampling on. It made for smoother slow mo.

Andrew, I will try the resmpling on..regarding the nd fader, its not as important with the kit lens ,as its a slow lens, but if you want a shallow DOF you will have to use a faster lens maybe a 2.8 ,2 or 1.8 , if you do than shooting outside and having that look can only be made with the use of nd filter, unless you go up with the shutter speed , but its not a good idea ..you will have stutter issue..i bought an vari nd filter and i use it with my 50mm 1.4 and 1.8 also with the 28mm 2.8 and it helps big time to stay at that 120 or 60 shutter speed..
one question if you dont mind, in vegas, where the property of the clip is ,what do you have put for the deinterlace method (none, blend fields, or interpolate fields)?

I have always just had mine set to Blend Fields.

    Thanks for the advice!

since i'm in the market for a GH1 (would be giving up my trusty Canon XH-A1 to do so), it's hard not to ask technical questions, since this is the second video of your's that i've seen in doing random searches for GH1 videos. i got caught up in the CONTENT and mood of your videos thusfar (both this and the PeeWee football game). and this video looks great. it's inspiring what a little cam can do in the right hands. thanks man. still not sure if i'm gonna do it, but i'm leaning...

to add to my comment...i've rewatched a few of my videos again lately, and i think for myself, the xha1 is overkill....maybe i'm leaning a little further...thanks for some inspiration!

Thank you for your kind comments Chris. People have said that the GH1 is a great B cam, but I beg to differ. I have a 16 GB card and get 2 hours of record time. The biggest flaws are the AVCHD compression at 17mbps and when audio is important I have to record separately with my Zoom H2. But Those two compact pieces of equipment are quite the dynamic duo for travel! I absolutely love this camera!

that's great to hear Andrew. been looking at the Zoom recorders as well, and hey, i can deal with 17mbps...who in the hell do you know that's not a tech-buff can tell the difference?!?
