Yep that's the one but with different rails.

Looks amazing. I want to get the same rig for my Mark II. How much was all of this?
  •
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
The rails, follow focus and Mattebox were from ProAim and were about $750 US
The shoulder support, grip bar and offset rails and carbon fibre rods were about $500 US
And then the springed support pole, belt and mount bracket were about $200 US
I have also added assorted bits, external LCD, micro mount and quick release plates that probably add up to a few hundred on top of that but not technically necessary

Hi, could you give me tip where I can buy a belt with this spring-loaded pole rod?
  •
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Hi, you can get a full rig from here dvtec.tv/ as I already had the rails, matte box etc I just got the pole and used a regular lifting support belt.

Thanks so much for showing us your setup. This is actually exactly a very similar setup i am going to purchase. I was really excited to see the proaim matte box and follow focus on your setup. How do you like it so far?
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Am very happy with it, I would like a flip out MatteBox and will most probably get one in the future but for now it is more than adequate, as for the rails and the follow focus, very happy, have done several shoots now with the camera, and the results always massively out do our Panny 202

Evan, can you give me the link to the cinevate part you used for the pole, also, can you link up the proaim system you are using? thank you.

Wondering if this is the one?

Hey yep that's the Proaim, the pole wasnt from cinevate it was from dvtec.tv/
  •
  • Bellographix 2 years ago
Thanks Evan. My setup will be very similar to yours. I think that with the redrock and proaim, it's a great combo for the price, as well as with the dvtec gear.

Thanks so much for posting this.

    Not a prob :)

How would you mount this rig on a tripod?
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Easy, the base plate for the ProAim actually comes threaded with all major sized threads so you can mount it directly on the tripod, I attached a Manfrotto QuickRelease plate to the base so i can pull it off my Miller easily, but that is not technically necessary

did you ever thought about getting that GH-1?
it is pretty popular around vimeo users.

    any comment would be great.

    best wishes,

    sebastian

Not really, I have a lot of Nikon gear, so thats why I went for the D300s. Also the body was a replacement for my aging D200 as a still shooter primarily, the video was just an added bonus. I am thinking of getting one of the Casio high speed cameras for a bit of fun over Xmas as well

I just got the pro aim kit and let me tell you, this thing is HEAVY! Man, with the shoulder mount, this thing will weigh in around 15 lbs. Is that normal weight for hours and hours of shooting? I don't know, but with the belt pod stabilizer from DVTEC, it will help tremendously.
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Funny, don't really notice the weight once its on my shoulder, its pretty similar to a Panny 502 etc. One thing you can do to cut down the weight is to go to carbon fiber rails, Bu tthe plate really does need to be as stable and not flex, so the weight is a good thing as everything hangs off it.
  •
  • Bellographix 2 years ago
Yeah, I guess you're right. A bit more weight equals more stable footage. Hope my shoulder can handle it, LOL!
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
For sure. With the springed pole it is amazingly quite neutral in terms of weight.

Have you bought this kit "Follow Focus + matte box sunshade kit for D90 5d mark II 7D"? Im asking because you have the Follow Focus V2 and in the kit there is the old modell.
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Correct I have the V2, the kit I got was an ebay one so probably not exactly the same as the link I posted above but close.

How do you like the proaim FF? A lot of the sub-$1k units have some play in the gears, and I'm finding that focus with my D90 is too critical for that. Is the Proaim pretty tight? Nice job!
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
There is a little play in the gears, not a heck of a lot but it is there, to be honest the rings for th elenses I think are the primary problem as as you adjust their size the gear angle changes slightly thus you never get a perfect fit, this is an issue fo all the focus units that use springed gears to add to regular lenses, versus cinema linses that are pre-geared dont have this issue. I have been able to pull focus reliably with the Proaim and am pretty happy, long term it probably wont last as long as other units, but I tend to treat my gear with exceptional care so I am not too concerned.

Are you using the V2 Pro Aim Follow Focus or the V1? The V2 model looks a lot like the zacuto one in design. I wonder if it's even half as good.
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Yep its the V2. Look its OK for the money, you cant really control the tension as you can with the Zacuto, which may be a problem in the future if it starts to slacken. I am pretty happy with it, and honestly, unless you are using prime cinema lenses that come pre-geared, you wont notice the difference. The build quality is pretty good, I would say maybe 80% of the Zacuto, but long term my guess is they wont last as long as th Zacuto or the Redrock units. But if you need a good follow focus unit that is reasonably priced then I would highly recommend.

I may check that one out; I know what you mean regarding flexing those lens rings to different diameters, but if the gear pitch is standard, there may be a solid-gear solution for my most-used lenses (which is just three or so for D90 video, and they're manual so they don't get used for stills)
  • Evan Butson plus 2 years ago
Yeah I think Cinevate do some from memory.

Hey Evan, exactly how are you connecting the support pole to the rig?
  • Evan Butson plus 1 year ago
Hi, I use a rail mount block from Cinevate, that holds a small plastic rod that has a spring slightly wider than the pole on it, it has a piece of clear hose over that that stops the spring from bending too much as it just has to flex a little, basically I just duplicated how it attaches to the full DVTEC mount, I have uploaded a photo, sorry bout the quality, it was taken on my iPhone in a hurry tdepost.com/image/cinevate.jpg
  • Jonathan Goff plus 1 year ago
The link to your picture is not working...can you re-upload the picture? I am very interested to see what you did you the spring. Thanks

Did a more detailed parts list blog with photos here

Thanks for responding! I have that rail mount block from Cinevate so I'm on the right track so far lol. Thanks for the photo.

Hey Evan I was curious if you had links to the Cinevate part as well as the spring attachment.

I'm asking because I own a DVMulti Rig and was looking at building a DSLR rig and wanting to utilize the same DVTec support pod (which I already own).
  • Evan Butson plus 1 year ago
All the links for all the parts are here
    tdepost.com/blog/2010/3/16/the-infamous-parts-list.html
  • Michael Liebergot plus 1 year ago
Evan the only thing that you don;t mention parts to are what spring mechanism you use for the spring support pod.

I already have a DVmulti Rig and a few support pods, but DVTec uses a QR release mechanism for their pods and I was looking for a solution t mod a cage rig that I am looking into getting.
  •
  • pairsis 1 year ago
so what exactly is the rig good for?
  • Evan Butson plus 1 year ago
Stabilising your camera so you get nice smooth shots

  • Mike O'Neal 1 year ago
Nice idea with the pole. I like what you've done.
  • Evan Butson plus 1 year ago
    Cheers.
  •
  • How exactly did you mount the support pole to the rig? You seem to have some kind of spring attached to the rig, which then holds the support pod. Do you have a link to this spring/ part? You said it was from Cinevate?
  •
  • Evan Butson plus 1 year ago
The 15mm Rod mount block is from Cinevate (although pretty much everyone makes them) to that I just screwed in a small blastic mount(actually the end of a CD spindle if you believe it) with a spring glued into it and a plastic sleeve to stop the spring bending too much, heres an image, sorry bout the crap quality, iphone cameras suck cl.ly/6027aae37f6b06fc12a6
