Glad you got the homage! I was so freaked out when I saw that video back in the day. It's stayed with me ever since...

It's... ok. I like the song and Hope Spitshard is a good rapper, but something about the video didn't sit well with me. It's the portrayal of the story that seems a bit wonky; the overall rhythm of what gets shown. I mean, I get the idea of her eating the dude 'cause she eats emcees, but I think it could've been edited or portrayed differently to communicate better.

Just my 2 cents. It's an entertaining video still, and the song slaps so its still all good.
  • Kid Heroes 1 year ago
Ummm. You got it! She eats him like a piece of cake. What more is there to communicate? No need to show them mixing in the flour and the eggs, and baking it in the oven... haha
  • The storyline could've been stronger if she just ate emcees. I'm going to agree with cyphaflip in the "wonky" storytelling because she only ate that particular emcee as revenge for getting clowned on-stage. So in essence, the storytelling did make her seem weak.

If it could've been re-edited, I would write this story as Hopie being told she can't rap from various other emcees or people from her life roadblocking her from success. Or even the crowd off-stage making assumptions about her skill level because she's small, female, and not the stereotypical battle rapper. The guy who clowns her on-stage does it before he hears her rhymes. Then she starts rapping and she owns the stage, owns the crowd, and even owns the other emcees. The end scene shows her slicing through her biggest nemesis (maybe the dude clowning her) and serving it up to the crowd.

Good take but it sounds too much like "8 Mile". Though I love the part of serving the cake to the crowd. We cut back to the same stage and she's rapping while eating cake with everyone. HA! Maybe in the feature version of YUMMY...

Kresta hit it on the head, which I failed to articulate, as to how she only ate the one emcee in revenge for getting clowned. I understand her revenge plot might in one way communicate how she's ruthless and not one to be messed with, but it can also be viewed as being petty and spiteful as well. I mean, as an emcee, if I were to get bumrushed by a wack rapper on stage, several things should/could/would happen:

    1. Security should be on top of it, then continue rockin the crowd
    2. My crew would be on top of it, then continue rockin the crowd
    3. I'd knock the guy out, then continue rockin the crowd
    4. I'd take the mic back and push him off stage, then continue rockin the crowd

But she just STOOD there, arms crossed and took it. That isn't necessarily the attitude I get when I'm hearing what's pretty much a battle track. Since her main hook is her saying "so MANY emcees in my tummy", I guess that's what I was expecting to see. Maybe she's an opening act, and just outshines the head liners. Maybe she enters a cipher circle of guys rapping and just blows everybody away.

Don't get me wrong though; the literal render of her eating a guy as a cake is indeed quite clever and original (though dumbfoundead also did Rapper-O's which was cereal instead of cake), it's just the story behind it I'm not fully convinced of.

Lastly, I'm not here to diss your work or anybody involved. As a developing graphic designer, constructive crit in our field is vital, as I'm sure it is in yours, and I'm trying to articulate this all as best as I can. I'm not saying that the MV was bad in any way, I'm just pointing out things that came to my attention that I would have like to see worked differently is all.

Hey cyph, I take none of this personally. So don't feel you're dissing our work and don't take my sarcastic comments personally ha! I prefer hearing about genuine criticisms than the usual "LIKE IT" comments. It gives me a chance to also share some of my creative insights, so again thank YOU for being so sharing. I love the fact that you want more clarity with the story, since rarely do we get ANY plot in a music video. Having a story structure in our videos has always been our trademark. I never saw the clever Rapper-O's video until recently, when many blogs started comparing the two. YUMMY's "story" is inspired by 4 major things:
    1) Alice in Wonderland (the shrinking, the Mad Hatter inspired outfits)
    2) ROXANNE SHANTÉ "ROXANNE'S REVENGE" music video (which we substituted the mobile DJ scene of the late 80's)
    3) TOM PETTY "DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE” music video (which Kresta caught, was a controversial music video in the 80's that bothered feminists; I just twisted it so the guy gets "eaten" instead)
    4) A real life incident that happened to Hopie. It was really this "incident" that finally gave the video's main motivation. I'm sure we've all had our passive moments. I know I have.
I just took it all, popped it in the blender, and that's what you see. So that's my visual interpretation of the song. Would love to hear more versions of how other folks would do it. Please share!

Video looks great! hey what camera did you shoot this with? I watched he making off video and it looked like a DVX100 with that 35mil look attachment on the front. Is that what you used?
  • Kid Heroes 1 year ago
Thanks Hunter. Our crew used a Panasonic hmc 150 with a letus adapter.
